Cotton lit it up from 3 at 25%. Not sure that translated to "you could see he could shoot right away". But like you said, agree to disagree. ....gotta love friartown... Can't let that go ..... I knew you would go to the stats. He also shot 52% inside the arc which is betty damn good for a 5'9 kid. Did you see Cotton play as a frosh? He had a pure looking jump shot when he stepped foot on campus. It's not like he reinvented his jump shot in the offseason. He was also one of the best FT shooters on the team as a frosh.

I remember Bryce hitting the mid range baseline jumper a lot as a frosh. His jumper definitely had potential early which i think Mick is trying to say

Metinks there is some revisionist history going on here. PC was Cotton’s only D-1 offer as I recall. He was heading to a JUCO before a desperate Friars’ staff gave him a call very late in the process. My recollection is that most were wondering when he would be transferring out to a Program where he would get to play,in light of his poor performance as a Frosh. Thankfully,he and PC stuck with it.The rest is history.

Re: I remember Cooley at his Connecticut Fall Sports Night. Someone asked him if there was anyone on the current roster which surprised him heading into his first season as the Friars' coach. I'll never forget, he forget he stood there a moment rubbing his chin. Then, almost like he couldn't believe what he was about to say, he said: Bryce Cotton. Yeah, Bryce Cotton, he can play.

Think that was after his soph year when he showed improvement

I remember people writing Cotton off after his freshman season (myself included). He improved immensely.
I remember Kris Dunn could barely dribble a basketball his Freshman season.
MAL has a coaching staff with proven results and he has talent. Long ways to go, and plenty of time to improve his game. He does have his work cutout for him.
I've learned to temper expectations. I was hoping for big things from Maliek White this season because I thought he displayed skill his freshman year and PC guards under Cooley have improved.
This is pretty much what I expected from this freshman group. I think it's natural as fans to set high expectations, but history shows that PC is not bringing in freshman who dominate. We all say that rankings mean nothing, but every year, people look at rankings and dream about max potential as a freshman.

For the most part, the winning programs sign ranked players every year. That's why they win. I'll leave this here again: 2017 PG Rankings from 247Sports: 8) Lindell Wigginton (Iowa State): 16.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.3 APG 9) Makai Ashton-Langford (PC): 5 PPG, 2 RPG, 2.3 APG 10) Tremont Waters (LSU): 15.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 5.9 APG 247sports.com/Season/2017-Basketball/CompositeRecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&Position=PG

Freshman can most certainly contribute. To clarify, I think we're better off if we do not have to rely on freshman. It works for some programs, and while Cooley is upgrading talent, our game is still through player development.

The turnover MAL had when he got it poked from behind was just absolutely terrible. Zero court awareness.

He's been largely unplayable.

The worst part about it was he could have advanced the ball for a mismatch as soon as he got going. This is because he’s not a PG. He was trying to take it into the lane himself. A PG would have had his head up looking for teammates.

Here's three questions that are better suited for the recruiting board, but I'm posting them here anyways: next year Kyron is not here. Most here are down on MAL and Edwards. White is not a true PG, and neither (in the short term) is incoming David Duke.
What exactly is next year's plan for the point, if MAL only improves modestly and Duke only flashes potential but is not yet ready for prime time minutes at the point? Should we bring in a JUCO point as an insurance policy, figuring that a spot (Edwards?) opens up? Lastly, would that upset all the chemistry and finely tuned recruiting story lines told to David Duke etc?
BTW, I regret that I keep defaulting to JUCOs as our answer (as I have done previously with Young). But please note that JUCOs come in as juniors as would be the two young men who are disappointing me this season.

I wouldn't write off Maliek White. He improved significantly last offseason and I'd put my $ on him running the show next season.
