Just don't get all this woe is me stuff - we have made the freakin' Tourney which was no sure thing when this season of 'potential' started. Many projected NIT, (guilty) and hoped for solid steps forward. OK so we have stumbled lately but still we have taken many steps forward...
As bummed as I was post-Butler, I have 'recovered' and have not given up on these kids at all - I actually think we can and will beat St. John's on Thursday.
Not so sure we can overtake NOVA but get by SJU and who knows? Also think with the right match up that they are very capable of winning one in the NCAA's and again, win 1 and who knows? If they do both, (beat SJU + 1 in Tourney) I would be thrilled (but not blown away at all) - lose Thursday yet win 1 in the NCAA's and this will be very happy Friar...
Checked this morning and found these thinking all are current:
ESPN (Lunardi) 6 CBS Sports (Palm)5 USA Today 6 Team Rankings (Web) 5
*
Depending on above, and Kris Dunn's tourney play, thinking he comes back for one more year; see PC and family taking out that NCAA insurance policy and next year we could be even better.

lose Thursday yet win 1 in the NCAA's and this will be very happy Friar...this is where I'm at....I'd trade the BET for a single ncaa tourney win (non play-in) at this point...this year only or until it happens....

Definitely, I admit I gave up after the Brown Stain™. I had them at 18-19 wins maybe and NIT after that. I had forgotten about the importance of the whole conference success in OOC and RPI. I saw a YOUNG team in disarray at the time, but they responded beautifully. I do agree the last month or so has been kind of up and down, with a lot of wins over softies and losses against the better comp. That has been disappointing. Yet still here we are, right in the thick of things, headed back to a second straight NCAA for the first time in decades, playing in the BET for seeding purposes. Can't ask for much more at this time. I will be disappointed if we don't win at least 1 NCAA game, need to get that monkey off our backs.
But lets enjoy this, this is what we wanted, to matter, and we do. Always great to be able to fill the Friars into my tourney brackets, which has been far too seldom until last year.
Fun stuff.

Depending on above, and Kris Dunn's tourney play, thinking he comes back for one more year; see PC and family taking out that NCAA insurance policy and next year we could be even better. My having turned negative is simply a personal psychological ploy so as to not get crushed emotionally again. I had 99% expectation of a Butler win and a #2 seed. I was CRUSHED. I'll take the 1% expectation for now so that the disappointment doesn't happen again. Note: I probably could be coaxed out from the back wall of underground bunker with the right type of encouragement. Till then, I securely under the table with meds in hand. PS: Lots to say about Dunn. Saving it all for the post-season.

Kmac:
Tough challenges for Friars, Rams this week
KEVIN MCNAMARA
It’s time to scramble for those Amtrak tickets and New York City subway tokens. Championship Week in New York City is upon us. Providence College and University of Rhode Island basketball fans will be flooding the city beginning on Thursday and hoping for a weekend-long stay. For the first time in forever, the Friars and Rams are both contenders to win their conference tournaments. They’re also contenders to be on their way home before the clock strikes midnight on Friday but, hey, optimism reigns.
The Friars will get things started on Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden when they face St. John’s. This is an awful matchup for Ed Cooley’s team. Steve Lavin’s crew of seasoned players has never tasted a Big East title or an NCAA Tournament spot and has played desperate for the last month. The Storm came to Providence and drilled 3-pointers from everywhere en route to a 83-70 win. The rematch at the Garden on Jan. 31 went to SJU as well, 75-66.
Don’t believe in the tired sports axiom that it’s really hard to beat a team three times in the same season. If you’re better, you would like to play someone 10 times. Thus far, the Red Storm’s D’Angelo Harrison, Sir’Dominic Pointer and friends have had their way with the Friars and probably can’t wait for the game to start. It’s up to the Friars to find a way to defend the explosive Storm much better than they have in the two regular-season losses.
PC’s Big East tourney path is a minefield. If the Friars survive the Storm, they are lined up to face top-seeded Villanova. The Cats rolled a St. John’s team down two starters with minor injuries, 105-68, on Saturday and look like they could cruise to the crown at MSG. We shall see.
If the Friars can play their way into Friday’s semifinals, it would set up a doozy of a Rhode Island hoop doubleheader. The truly crazed could watch the 7 p.m. game at the Garden, rush downstairs and catch a subway to Brooklyn for the Barclays Center and Atlantic 10 quarterfinals. The third-seeded Rhody Rams will play at 9 p.m., most likely against George Washington. The Colonials will face the winner of a Duquesne-Saint Louis first round game on Thursday for the right to tip off against Dan Hurley’s team.
Like Providence, URI does not have an easy road in Brooklyn. GW (20-11) has a slew of veterans and was expected to contend for the A-10 title after playing in the NCAA Tournament last year. The Colonials started 16-4 but finished 4-7. URI scratched out a 59-55 win over GW at the Ryan Center in the only meeting of the teams this season and a similar grind-it-out game should unfold if the Colonials make it to Friday night.
If the Rams move on to the semifinals, they could run into second-seeded Dayton. The Flyers gave the Rams their only stiff beating of the Atlantic 10 season just last week, 75-59. Can you say payback?

Too funny pcdad - best thing about tokens? The French centime a 2 cent piece worked every time - friend home from French colony Senegal and the Peace Corps gave me several rolls that I used for a long, long time...LOL!
Think if this rolls out KMAC will probably be the ONLY RI crazy running from a PC game to go watch the URI Rams play, right?
Yes, KMAC is right about SJU and us mano-o mano - just have a feeling we will give it our best and have a better than puncher's chance in this one on Thursday...

A director in my former company made the NY Times as an "Executive" for getting caught putting a CT toll token in the slot rather than the NYC token. He kept his job but his rise in rank was ended. No tears for him though as he retired in comfort with something they used to call a "pension".
A trip to the nyc library card catalog rendered us pockets of circular paperclips used in parking meters in my neighborhood for "dime" charge per hour that we'd insert to expired meters as the "meter Maid" came up and down the block saving owners the parking ticket. We'd wait for them to return to the car and tell that that we "fed the meter" and they avoided a "Ticket". Usually, we'd be reimbursed for our diligence... 10 cents bought a lot of candy and sodas, (ah... minerals or perhaps tonic), eggcreams and comic books.
I remember when the token cost 15 cents and the incredulous debates about the nickel fare raises (from memory... so I could be wrong) to 20, 25, 30, 35, 40?, 45?, 50, 60, 75, 90? and then, the almighty $1. as you recall...dem wus da days.
...
I shan't be making the journey with Kevin out to Barclays after the PC game.
Go Friars! Take those cocky, mouthy, SJU players and send them home to Utopia Parkway.

Rock - you had pretty high expectations for this group post Feb 1st....where have we fallen short? We haven't, not at all. I've been consistent all year in saying we'd be a 10+ win, top four BE team that makes the tourney and I think that's exactly who we are. I will admit however, there were times this year (after the ND win for example) where I thought we'd be more. Maybe that's where you may be thinking the team has fallen short in my eyes. I am also on record saying we wouldn't get to this spot if one of the frosh didn't step up in February and that is clearly been answered by Bentil (save for Sunday, of course). I just hate the the bracket for us in NYC, that's all.

I've seen a pattern of rebounding from disappointments this year. I have a good feeling about Thursday.

Mayor Bob Wagner and 'saving' the 15 cent token thing was a headline headache for many many months - good one dad. Just a preview of the arrival of young John Lindsey vs. union boss Mike Quill and the transit strike - yikes! Old crusty Irishman Quill always called the patrician Mayor "Lindsley" Love the meter scam thing - and oh yeah trips to the candy store for those Brooklyn eggcreams - pricey at .15 whilst candy remained a nickle - oh well...having an eggcream, chocolate or little known vanilla, along with mustard coated and three for a nickle pretzel rods from the counter can was heavenly!
