Joe Hassett must be quite the golfer: www.golfgenius.com/pages/2691580I got in a bit over my head here at the John Burke Memorial Championship at Wanumetonomy G&CC and Newport CC this week, but happened to notice Hassett's name in the Senior Division standings. We were on opposite courses Monday and Wednesday, so I never saw him. It's one thing to do pretty well in my Monday morning league at Swansea CC, but something quite different when pit against a lot of the better golfers in the area. Attachment Deleted

I spotted a couple of familiar names, including PC centre Andy Calcione Exeter CC. On another Golf note I believe Digest picked Friar soccer AA as the #1player in his sport (futbol). Which is kind of a nice honor for the 1 handicap Julian Gressel considering the number of pros worldwide.

View AttachmentI haven’t played Swansea CC in years. I heard they have done a great job with course. It always had a great layout but it used to get so much play in made it difficult to keep up the conditions. This summer I got back into golf for the first time in 15 years. I recently joined a club that had an excellent promotion. 2k dues, no initiation fee, no assessments, no clubhouse chits per month, and no golfing restrictions.

That’s an incredible deal. Assuming it was limited to one season?

It still gets heavy use, though the multi-week shutdown during the spring really helped to revive conditions. But then the drought did a number on things as the season wore on. I have a weekday membership and avoid the crowds there on weekends. I hadn't done much for 27 years, from when my wife first got pregnant until I retired. I'm four seasons in now and it's become my primary focus.

Play Misquamicut The best course in RI Used to play Misquamicut back in the late 60’s, early 70’s when I caddied there. Tough track, par 69. Was always in immaculate condition.

Still is I caddied there also and just finished my sixth summer working on the golf staff Awesome. Do they still have caddies there? I remember the base rate was $4/bag back then lol. Carry doubles and get out twice, you could make $25-30 if you were good. The old caddy shack must be long gone. That thing was old back then.

Play Misquamicut The best course in RI Not exactly the easiest course to get onto....l Love Swansea. Heard they have a pretty good family deal going. Now that Metacomet is gone and rounds are at an all time high, I wonder if the cheap deals will go away. Valley in West Warwick also shut down. And Ledgemont will probably be housing development within 5 years.

Atlantic Golf driving range in S. Attleboro is going away, to be developed. Same with Mulligan's Island in Cranston, where I spent much time this summer on their expansive pitch & putt range trying to discern the mysteries of wedges. Windmill Hill Par 3 course in Warren now being developed into a solar farm. The Warren Golf Range had been for sale for years, but luckily the new owner is keeping it as a driving range.

Did all of the courses stay open thru all this and if so, was there lots of play? I belong to 2 city courses here in Terre Haute and we had a record amount of play at both courses this year. I know some courses in Indy did not open early on but eventually did.

My home course is in Mass., where all courses were shut down for several weeks, so a few of us did a tour of various RI courses during that period, where most courses stayed open (for RI residents only). I hadn't been at Exeter CC since the '80s, so it was nice to get reacquainted with that. I've decided I like Richmond CC a lot. I'd say courses were busier than normal during that April-May period ... there weren't many other things you could do. There were issues of Mass. people attempting to get on RI courses. One group parked at a McDonald's, then piled into a friend's vehicle with RI plates before heading to a course. They got caught and fined.
