www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/greg-logan/steve-lavin-makes-case-for-extension-at-st-john-s-1.10097070...... fansided.com/2015/03/24/st-johns-hasnt-made-final-decision-steve-lavin-yet/St. John’s hasn’t yet decided what they want to do about head coach Steve Lavin and his future with the team. The St. John’s Red Storm’s season ended Friday with an NCAA Tournament loss to San Diego State, and with the season over, talk has turned to the future of head coach Steve Lavin. Lavin is entering the final year of his six-year deal with the school, and it’s time to either extend the head coach or let him go. The New York Post‘s Zach Braziller reports that St. John’s has yet to make a decision on Lavin’s future: Lavin has won 60 percent of his games at St. John’s, with an 81-55 record. Lavin took over at St. John’s in 2010, and immediately took the team to a 21-12 record, their best in eight years and the second-biggest year-to-year jump in Big East history. Lavin has also overseen a 38 percent increase in home attendance in his tenure.
Lavin’s tenure since has been filled with high high and low lows. On the one hand, you have the team’s significant improvement when Lavin took over, the high-end prospects he has signed and the three 20-win seasons in four years (he missed almost all of 2011-12 recovering from prostate cancer); on the other hand, Lavin has just one Big East tournament wins, zero NCAA Tournament wins, and several academic problems and other incidents with recruits, including the recent drug suspension of center Chris Obepka, which may have cost them dearly in the tournament. Either way, the school must make a decision quickly, so as not to jeopardize the recruiting process with uncertainty.Lavin came to St. John’s after a stint at UCLA; there, he took the Bruins to six straight Sweet Sixteens but was fired after the 2003 season was the first losing year at UCLA in 52 years. What it really comes down to is whether St. John’s believes they can do better than Lavin. They certainly don’t want a repeat of 2002 through 2010, when the team made zero NCAA Tournament appearances, and had just two winning seasons under Lavin’s predecesor, Norm Roberts. On the other hand, they may have aspirations of winning the Big East and earning high seeds in the NCAA Tournament; things that Lavin just hasn’t proved himself of. For his part , Lavin sounds confident that he’ll be back. Time will tell whether or not he’s right.

I bet Herb would make a good X and O mentor for a young coach with his shiny head

Too bad cause he does seem like a TW good guy type. Looks like Capel gets the right of first refusal.

Bobby Hurley is DePaul front-runner, sources told ESPN.
Buffalo coach Bobby Hurley has emerged as the front-runner for the DePaul job, multiple sources told ESPN.
Hurley, 43, is a former Duke star and NBA point guard who took the Bulls to the NCAA tournament this year, just his second heading up the program. Hurley previously was an assistant under his brother, Danny, at Wagner and Rhode Island.
One source told ESPN that Hurley, whose team lost to West Virginia in the round of 64, is expected to interview this weekend at DePaul. He would replace Oliver Purnell, who was 54-105 in five seasons.
Parker Executive Search is helping DePaul with the process. It's the same company that was hired for the Buffalo men's basketball opening a couple of years ago.
Sources told ESPN that Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew and former DePaul star and NBA coach Tyrone Corbin also are in the mix.

nypost.com/2015/03/24/when-it-comes-to-lavins-future-st-johns-silence-is-deafening/Eight months into his tenure, St. John’s president Conrado Gempesaw faces his first big decision. Retain men’s basketball coach Steve Lavin or start over with a new coach? The decision seems to be a difficult one. Though several sources close to the program believe Lavin is on the way out, no confirmation from the school has been given. The staff has yet to be notified of the school’s position. A series of meetings and conversations have taken place among higher-ups at the Queens school that have yet to produce any results, according to sources. “I think this is the president taking his time to make sure he has all the information and a board that is being overly cautious and wants to make the right decision,” a source connected to the program said. But the silence in recent days has come as a surprise to some, considering Lavin or the next coach need to get to work on filling out a roster with the senior core moving on and few reinforcements in house or on the way. On Saturday, Lavin expressed optimism he would not only be back, but receive a contract extension. There is also a potential buyout that has to be negotiated. Lavin is due between $1.6 million and $1.8 million, a source said. During the Big East Tournament, the school said it would be evaluating Lavin after the season finished. “This is probably a decision that should’ve been made in January or February,” the source said. “This shouldn’t be a decision that was based on what happened in March. It should be based on a five-year period of his tenure. “Either we want to invest five more years in him or start over. It’s pretty simple.” In the meantime, Lavin has reached out to television networks to gauge their interest should he be let go, sources said. He worked for ESPN as a college basketball analyst for seven years before taking the St. John’s job.Lavin’s five years at St. John’s have been a mixed bag. He has raised the profile of the program and landed nationally ranked recruits. He reached two NCAA Tournaments — before his arrival St. John’s was without a berth in the tournament for nine years — compiled three 20-win seasons and went 81-55 overall, 40-32 in the Big East. His postseason record, however, is a dismal 2-8 and his teams are a combined 6-13 in March, the sport’s all-important month. In recent weeks, he has talked about how different the team would be had Moe Harkless and Jakarr Sampson never left early for the NBA, which underscores his inability to replace them. There have been off-the-court issues and eligibility problems. Of the three players he signed in his 2014 recruiting class, only one qualified, contributing to a razor-thin roster. His only functioning big man, Chris Obekpa, was suspended for the NCAA Tournament opener against San Diego State for testing positive for marijuana use, crippling the Johnnies’ chances of advancing. The future is uncertain if Lavin is retained. Seniors D’Angelo Harrison, Phil Greene IV, Sir’Dominic Pointer and Jamal Branch graduate, while Obekpa and sophomore Rysheed Jordan may not return. Those six received the majority of the minutes this year. Lavin has talked about how important the 2015 recruiting class is, and yet he has just one committed impact player, four-star guard Brandon Sampson of Louisiana. — Additional reporting by Howie Kussoy
