Nice job here by the Brown Daily Herald. Compare to the pedestrian variety coming from the projo (columns, news). www.browndailyherald.com/2019/03/20/university-offered-coach-position-alum-indicted-admissions-scandal/ Having seen Ernst play both sports I have some opinions that I'll make around his arraignment in 5 days. They vary from the stuff Bunky is pushing. Good for the kids over at the BH. It looks like Ernst wanted Brown where I'm sure the bribes would have been offered there too. By the way I'm not trying to kill Gordo here as I think the bribes would have been tough to turn down. But at some point you have to say to yourself that 'there are too many moving parts here' and I'm going to get caught. His finances are going to be wiped out with this.

“Our program cannot have a coach that looks at the head coaching position as a convenient paycheck”
Quite a comment from a student.
This Ernst dude @ an alleged 2.7 mil side business sounds like a real character...that he was “let go” by Georgetown before the scandal broke is telling.
Brown dodged a bullet whilst URI will go through the process of court leading to a decision on Ernst.

OUR TURN
URI thoroughly vetted coach
DAVID M. DOOLEY AND THORR BJORN
We take strong exception to the tone and content of Sunday’s editorial, “Cheating their way into universities,” especially as it relates to the characterization of the University of Rhode Island.
The university was first made aware of a nationwide admission scandal when the FBI announced federal indictments of about 50 people, including URI head women’s tennis coach Gordon Ernst. Hired by URI seven months ago, Ernst was indicted for incidents that allegedly took place while he was head coach at Georgetown University. URI placed Ernst on administrative leave and is monitoring the criminal case.
As indicated in two statements to the media, members of the search team to find a new women’s tennis coach and our athletic director conducted a thorough search, and interviewed numerous Georgetown officials and references. In all of their remarks, there was not a single mention of recruitment irregularities related to Mr. Ernst.
Georgetown officials now say that they conducted an internal investigation and in 2017 found Ernst to have committed recruitment violations. Georgetown did not share any details of that probe when URI contacted the school. Even when pressed to share anything of concern about Mr. Ernst, the Georgetown athletic director provided URI’s athletic director with a very positive review and said that hiring Mr. Ernst would be great for the University of Rhode Island tennis program.
In fact, a press release issued by Georgetown announced his resignation in June 2018 and said that it was “grateful for the many efforts Gordie has made over the years to create a first class tennis program at the university.” The release went on to detail Mr. Ernst’s accomplishments in turning the team into a nationally ranked squad and a Big East standout.
The release concludes with, “The University wishes Gordie all the best.” Georgetown officials pulled that resignation statement from the website last week around the time the FBI indictments were announced.
The Journal writes: “The state’s taxpayers are paying for that poor decision, funding his salary while he is on paid leave from the school. Why didn’t the university perform due diligence before hiring him?”
How could we have known about Mr. Ernst’s record at Georgetown? If the Georgetown community didn’t know, and the Georgetown Voice student newspaper is now asking why they were not informed, how would URI have known there were issues regarding Mr. Ernst’s departure?
Georgetown’s student newspaper printed this headline on March 14: “Georgetown gave URI positive reference for former tennis coach after internal investigation into admissions misconduct”
The Georgetown Voice also noted that, “In the university press release announcing Ernst’s resignation on July 1, 2018, the university did not say why the coach was leaving, nor make any references to their investigation.” Ernst’s separation from Georgetown may have been widely known, but that he was found to have committed recruitment violations was not.
The editorial’s statement that the university “snapped him up” is simply untrue. Like all searches at the university, the one for a new tennis coach followed a rigorous set of standards, approved by our Office of Human Resource Administration and Office of Affirmative Action.
The university is committed to accountability and due process. We can share with you the extensive process conducted in all of our searches to ensure that each candidate is vetted fully. We invite you to take a look at our admission process, which like all of our operations, is open to public scrutiny.
We believe strongly in a free and diligent press, but in this case, The Providence Journal simply got it wrong.
David M. Dooley is the president of the University of Rhode Island. Thorr Bjorn is URI’s athletic director. Editor’s note: The Providence Journal stands by its opinion that URI overlooked red flags and failed to sufficiently vet the now-indicted coach.

yeah sure mr.URI AD, Ernst was leaving the oldest Catholic Univ. in the country that's a law and political powerhouse because he wanted to come back home to hit tennis balls to girls in Kingston. Only Bunky would think something like that.
Furthermore you knew he he was dismissed in Nov.2017 why didn't you ask why? The Gtn AD would be pretty stupid to explain why he fired Ernst knowing that the Feds were involved and would be upset if Georgetown blew their case against dozens of people (by talking about it). It's not Gtn's business to take uri by the hand and explain to them they had a faulty admissions office that didn't check on Ernst's 3 allowable admissions. They are quite embarrassed about it and owe URI nothing.
I don't believe that. Gtn likely explained that his record was not that good and they decided on a change. That isn't a + recommendation.

Robin Young got the full Bunky today (and you know what that's like). Sometime I get the feeling he doesn't know that Dick was more than just a "coaching legend." That he played both sports (T/H) at PC during the Lamoriello/Bellemore era. He wasn't just Gordie's father/coach. www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2019/04/10/college-cheating-scandal-gordie-ernst Anyway Bunky usually plays down any scandal till it becomes obvious it's very big and he has to change his tune. I stopped reading his stuff many years ago so I don't know what he's said about people he knows ( eg. Pitino, Doyle) who are facing the music. As I said long before BR, Gordie is wiped out financially and now it's a matter of how much time he has to do. His problem is the others are smart enough to plead. Ernst may have too much to have to own up to and nothing he can flip in the process. And yes I do feel bad for him even though he went way to far with this. It was dumb to not see this scam had too many working parts to survive somebody --in a big cast-- talking.

"Ernst and his wife own a condo assessed at $712,000 in Falmouth and a $1.56 million manse with six bathrooms in the opulent Washington, D.C., border town of Chevy Chase, Md. His motion calling for Talwani to order money released back to him states his assets “are significantly burdened by substantial debt” and “he lacks access to funds from friends or family sufficient to satisfy his monthly living expenses or mount a constitutionally effective defense to the pending charge.”
The thing to remember. You can bet against Gordie Ernst all you want. Not me.I’m a believer.Bunky 8/2018

Well it's been a few years but it appears like Ernst is going to get a deal soon. This is going to be expensive but maybe he can handle it? "The thing to remember. You can bet against Gordie Ernst all you want. Not me.I’m a believer."Bunky 8/2018
