There was a discussion this morning on CNBC as to who was the best college basketball player in the country this year. Joe Kernan (not one of my favorites) talked about Buddy Hield in glowing terms. Thought I'd hear about Kris. But John Harwood, who may or may not know much about NCAA bball, chimed in that he had heard Ben Bentil was the best.
This kind of national talk could start Ben thinking about coming out early.
I think he needs one more year (at least) and the Friars need him even more.

That's cool.
I think, much like recruiting, we think of this from the wrong perspective. That Ben may or may not "need another year" is not what ultimately decides these things. It's a supply and demand function. If Ben thinks the supply of players in the draft that are better than him is low then he is incentivized to come out. If he views that supply to be moderate or high then he must use caution.
Some kids, like Ledo and Dunn, did not follow this paradigm (one on each side of it ironically), but each of those guys began the year on the draft radar, the same can't be said of Ben so maybe that plays into it a bit.
If I had to venture a guess I would say he wouldn't crack the top 10-12 but is a sure 1st rounder so it's gonna be close call, likely not arriving at the outcome we'd like to see. Now if we all get what we really want - a nice NCAA ride this March - we will celebrate knowing that we just saw Ben's final games as a Friar.
Another reason I don't envy the challenges faced by Ed Cooley: attractive enough to land players you can't afford to lose early, not attractive enough to reload them without avoiding vacancy signs on your roster.

Is Bentil already considered a lock for the first round? Thinking if, as rock suggests, we do make a deep run, then probably yes. If not then no.
So what is a "deep run" this year with what is shaping up to be a wide open tourney?
Sweet 16? Elite 8?
Should we cure our home teamitis and continue our road warrior play then we will get a really good seed so...that table could be set for at least the first round games - maybe.
Bottom lline is that nagging need to get help from our players beyond Dunn and Bentil on a consistent basis and that includes better than 26% shooting - what the rest of the Friars shot vs the Hoyas.
We need to be able to present others as capable - so who for us can actually do this? So far it is obviously an issue even as different guys have helped in different situations.
And while we need to push to the paint adding some level of a three point threat is imperative IMO.
Is Bentil a capable first rounder? Yes BUT...( as above).

I read something yesterday about Bentil and his draft stock. One scout said that he is coming on faster than anyone. Another said that he should not think about coming out this year because he is not ready. He said he is an undersized 4. Ben reminds me of Leon Powe or maybe Brandon Bass. I would love for him to come back but how much better will he really be next year? If he is a first round pick he may go. Not to mention the new drafts rules allow kids to workout and come back. Ben is similar to Kris in that I think their stock will rise during workouts because they are athletic monsters. We may be sweating a few weeks this spring.

Better shooting range and faster than Powe or Bass. Some NBA scouts have apparently likened him to Draymont Green. I've yet to see his name appear on draftnet or draftexpress so he's still a bit under the radar, it seems.

The addition of a legit 5 for next year( even a 5th year unless that changes)) could also be a factor. Ben may go to the NBA workout camps and be told to go back and work on his outside shooting and ball-handling skills. Ed Cooley would have to be really creative unless he can move Ben and Rodney to the 4 and 3.

...and therein lies the consequences of the treachery of The Chooch and the ineffectiveness of Cooley to replace him. Hard to believe Ben would come back to play Center or even the 4 if he is mandated to hang near the paint.
Although he's leading the Big East in scoring and plays for a top 10 team, we should minimize his skills here at the FTH Message Board so the GM's don't find out how good he is right now. Such is the Machine that wtm has built here.

If he’s guaranteed to be a 1st rounder, then he will likely go (as he should). However, I’m still not sure if that will be the case. I think a lot of it will hinge on his measurements in draft camps/combines. If he comes in shorter than his listed 6’9”, they might want to see a better handle and an improved three point shot.
Did some digging on the nbadraft.net mock draft. Below looks like the PF competition in the first round for Bentil.
5: Ivan Rabb (6-10 with shoes) 6: Dragan Bender (no measurement, listed at 7-0) 9: Domantas Sabonis (6-10 with shoes) 11: Brice Johnson (6-9 ½ with shoes) 16: Deyonta Davis (6-9 ½ with shoes) 23: Henry Ellenson (6-10 ½ with shoes)
26: Jaron Blossomgame (no measurement, listed at 6-7) 27: Guerschon Yabusele (no measurement, listed at 6-8)
I think if Ben is able to slide into the first round it's going to be after Ellenson (if Ellenson actually decides to enter).

Draftexpress has him at 48 I believe for 2017 draft.

You actually telling me I should return all those phone calls mr. dex? * On topic? IF Bentil is a first round pick this year and leaves us then that has to translate from a legendary season and that 'deep' tourney run we all dream of actually happening..

Bentil is a SF in the NBA.....and a potential match up nightmare.....
I read something this weekend that compared his shooting ability in college to .......Kahwai Leonard of all people.....

Agree he is a SF and that's why I thought he'd be coming back next year (to work on shooting and handle). As of now, I felt like he'd have to compete with PFs in the draft until he expanded his game. However, I just looked up Leonard's college stats. Shot .250 from three for his two year college career. Uh oh.

Both will add 10 lbs in the offseason and be 1 and 2 leading scorers in the Big Bast.....................................
