CBSSports.com's Player of the Week: Providence's LaDontae Henton
November 24, 2014
NOTE: Henton is also BIG EAST Player of the Week for the first time in his PC career...
Big East Preseason Player of the Year D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera isn't off to a great start, proof being how the Georgetown junior is averaging just 9.0 points per game while shooting a career-low 31.8 percent from the field. Ditto for fellow All-Big East First Teamer JayVaughn Pinkston, a Villanova senior who is averaging a career-low 8.7 points per game.
But LaDontae Henton?
Man, he's doing better than fine.
Freed from the shadow of Bryce Cotton, Providence's 6-foot-6 forward got 21 points and 11 rebounds in the season-opening win over Albany, then recorded 12 points and four rebounds in last Monday's win over Binghamton, 22 points and two rebounds in Thursday's win over Navy and 24 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's win over Florida State before recording 38 points and two rebounds in Sunday's win over Notre Dame.
That's why LaDontae Henton is the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week.
"LaDontae is the most underrated kid in the country," said Providence coach Ed Cooley, whose Friars are 5-0 and ranked 26th in the updated Top 25 (and one). "He's got the 'it.' He's got the leadership. I hope they still have him under the radar."
Better hope again, Ed.
Because it's hard to keep somebody under the so-called radar when he makes 14 of the 19 shots he attempts in an upset of Notre Dame that was aired on national television.
Next up for Henton is Friday's game vs. Yale followed by Sunday's contest at top-ranked Kentucky. He'll enter the Yale game averaging 23.4 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting a career-best 56.4 percent from the field and a career-best 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
