Good stuff.
I always felt like it was hardest to recruit talented big men, but while Cooley has been raking in that regard, he seems to be having difficulty signing up highly regarded guards. Why do you think this is the case? I thought that Andre LaFluer was going to be strong presence, and I thought that the situation surrounding PC would have been totally different. Not that it's bad, but I'm a bit surprised to see everything going down the way that it is.

It seems like Cooley wants to have three guys on the court at all times with the ability to handle the ball. I could see that deterring some PGs away, but one would think SGs would be loving the chance to sign up in a system like this.

It seems like Cooley wants to have three guys on the court at all times with the ability to handle the ball...assuming most small forwards can adequately handle the rock, how is this different than most programs?...and i'm not sure we have any idea about cooley's line up preferences with our lack of depth since he's been the HC....it's not like he's had a ton of options....

Cooley has no problem having multiple ball handlers on the floor i.e. he wanted to play Dunn, Ledo and Austin at the same time. I think one thing that can be said about Cooley's preferences is he likes bigger guards and versatile big men. He is also a coach that is willing to coach to his roster and not just try to impose a system on players that don't fit.

Having those 3 guys on the floor together doesn't mean Cotton wouldn't have played. You also have to have some perspective as back when those comments re: Ledo, Dunn and Austin were being made Cotton wasn't All-American Cotton. The point is that Cooley will tailor his style to his roster. He will recruit the best players and make it work. He seems to prefer big guards and versatile big men but will take talent at whatever position he can get. You don't see every coach have the ability or willingness to change their system or style because their current roster doesn't fit whatever system or style they always run/prefer.

Can you give an example of a coach not adapting lax?
Fact is we have no evidence of cooley's preferred style of play...at least not at pc...the best 7 have played regardless of position....we had 1.5 ball handlers last year...Christ even dunns freshman year it was him and council....cotton was purely catch and shoot.....

I do think we will finally see a pressing Cooley team. Lack of a shot blocker and limited bodies have made it difficult to press but that may be a major change we will see defensively this year.

I agree 71. This team has length, athleticism ,depth and rim protectors that PC has not seen in a long time.Pressing and running is what Cooley wants to be able to do.

Ben Howland at the end of his UCLA tenure. As for what we do or don't know about Cooley's style of play - you can listen to him talk to know how he wants to play. Just because he hasn't had the players to play his preferred style doesn't mean we don't have a clue as to what that preferred style is.

lay it on me lax....with 5 ballhandlers (dunn/cartwright/chambers/lamomba/lindsey)....what should i expect this year? Cooley likes big guards and versatile big men. That's been my main refrain in this thread. He also doesn't mind having multiple ball handlers (what some other people might call "point guards") on the floor at the same time. He doesn't care as much about positions as he does about matchups. He is willing to play a totally different style of basketball if his roster calls for it. He values defense. These are all things that are known. If you want to be snarky and try to call me out for some reason, have at it. But the above is all I've been saying in this thread. I'm not saying I know every detail. I'm giving my opinion and what I have seen/heard since Cooley was hired. As for what I expect this year: I expect there will be plenty of lineup flexibility with the depth on the wing/in the frontcourt and I also think this team will be able to play some stellar defense. My biggest concern beyond Dunn staying healthy is this team's ability to score the ball in the half court.
