Noticed Jerry Remy was at PC game on Saturday, apparently with his grandson. This morning brings the surprising news that he intends to return to the Sox broadcast booth this Spring. Listened to an interview with him on ride into work. He was candid and honest regarding disgust with his son all the while expressing deep remorse for the murder of the mother of his grand daughter, Jen Martel.
Thought he would retire and stay retired so this is unexpected - still think he probably should have deferred and stepped down permanently. Problematic here is his style as the 'remdawg' with his joking persona and running commentary - he says that is him and he knows no other way to be on the air; guessing that will be the crux of his acceptance back or not.
Beyond the horror that has befallen both families here is the future guardianship issue of the granddaughter, currently in foster care and apparently being contested by both families...Not sure if this is the right decision or a good one but as he said, the Sox and NESN will know before too long and if the public reaction is negative, then they and he will step back and away from this return to the booth.

Apparently NESN left it up to him? I would have told him he's had a great run but we were making a change. There were likely a number of factors including cash that went into his decision. Viewers will support him however what happens if the Martel(sp) family decides to object in say June, in various public forums?
Too many variables for me I'd tell him that he can take part in other RS activities but not a daily broadcast.

I dunno. Pretty damn unfair to have your career extinguished by the actions of your adult son. "Hey Jerry, you can't work here anymore. Your kid killed someone." "Yeah, but I didn't do it." "No, but our audience and the media will be mad if you aren't somehow kept out of our sight so we aren't reminded that you have a son who killed someone. It makes us feel icky." Sounds tough to me.

He probably wants to work to try to keep his mind off of the horrific event.

Just to be clear I'm not suggesting Remy deserves to pay a price for a disturbed kid. But the RS shouldn't be involved at all.
I have yet to actually read a word about this case. I'd rather not hear about it either but that's not possible. If Jerry starts the season I hope for the best for him but finishing in Sept. would seem unlikely to me.
As an aside I don't like the way NESN does the games. I expect to like them less this season.

This is a tough one - I personally go back and forth in my mind with no answer. Even though I do think he probably should simply step back and away (after trial; give it time, etc.) - do agree he and Sox/NESN have a right to give it a go if he and they are comfortable with it.
Guessing in the end this is one that will be decided by the audience as the season rolls.
