Prospect Watch: How Ryan Carney prepared for Providence with the Revs Academy
By Patrick Donnelly
Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) has a Big (East) future ahead of him at Providence College.
He has spent the last six seasons plying his trade with the Revolution Academy. This season, he helped the U-19s compile a 14-7-3 regular season record, en route to a postseason berth, appearing in four of New England’s five clean sheets.
The 6-foot-3 Carney, who will be a freshman at Providence this fall, has also appeared on the international stage with the U.S. U-17 national team. In our latest Prospect Watch, we took a closer look at Carney’s skillset, with the help of Revolution Academy U-19 coach Brad Knighton.
Intangibles Knighton was still playing when Carney first arrived to the Revolution Academy as a youngster. He’s seen the keeper grow and mature both on and off the field. “To watch his progress year in and year out has been great. … I feel like his presence has gotten a lot better as he’s gotten older,” said Knighton of Carney.
Athleticism Carney’s athleticism has helped him earn reps with the Revs’ second team on a consistent basis, often multiple times a week when they need an extra keeper. “He’s come in and understood what it takes to be involved with the second team. … That’s a tribute to him and his being able to evolve his game the last couple seasons. The goal now is to get him playing as many games as possible and getting him ready for kind of a new adventure with the college season, and it being kind of a different test than youth soccer.”
Shot stopping Carney’s shot-stopping ability is “very high” in Knighton’s eyes. It goes back to his athleticism, plus his ability to read the game. Carney is efficient and gets in position quickly. As a result, he rarely chases the game or overexerts himself. “That gives him more time to sit and get relaxed for the shot that he’s about to face. … He understands the game, gets to his spots early and he’s got enough ability to make the saves that he needs to make, and make the goal as small as possible.”
Foot skills Carney’s distribution and crossing has been a key area that he’s worked to improve, before making the jump to the collegiate ranks. He and the coaching staff have spent one night a week solely on distribution, be it short passes, long passes or being able to spray balls over distance, either lofted or curled, with both feet. “He’s really added this element to his game, which has helped him excel when training with the second team. I remember when he first came in and started getting involved with the second team a couple years ago, they said his feet were kind of lacking in that regard. So, we’ve been working really hard on a weekly basis, trying to maximize and help him get to a better level with his feet.”

The sched. is formidable. The OOC is particularly tough, given there are too many games in a short period. To get off to an immediate point streak with 3 straight on road? Difficult.
I've seen nothing on projected lineups so I'll guess at one for Thursday. If staff puts out a 4-3-3 formation (vs. Q) I think it may look like:
Back: 4 Prego - Marshall - Periera - Dewhurst. Highly experienced except for So Marshall.
Midfield:3 Chevez - Batista - O'Brien. Chavez a rookie from Ct may be too green...but talented.
Fwds: 3 Scarbourough- Lara- Neto. Newcomers who staff brought in for goal scoring hopefully. Mature guys.
GK: They have 3 which could be problems for a highly rated Fr and RSFr who saw no action last season but was a prep standout at Milton Acad. Burns All BE preseason in net, can't falter. Final sea.
One third of this team is new. Other guys can break into lineup but depth is strong. Once established it may be tough to move somebody out unless inj's. It should be a good season but they have to raise their level (as compared to '23) to make the NCAA's. Bryant by the way, has really moved their program to another level. But may not be as good as last year (though still strong).

The goals they have scored have been from point blank range. Fine to get them from anywhere but you have to have more versatile shot attempts on goal. Part of the reason they aren't, is the play of the Midfield: hasn't been what they have hoped. friars.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/pearse-o-brien/10083 O'Brien has not played yet. I assume he's recovering from inj. Which they don't talk about for obvious reasons but it's hard to pick up anything from SIO previews. O'brien breaks down defenses from MF: it's what he's most valuable at. They need him, not scoring enough. * Of the Fr., Teixeira from Portugal has played immediately and close to 4 90m mat's. * Leto a grad-year fwd from Spain has 3g in 4matches. * Only forwards have scored. I don't think a MF has even got an assist yet. * All matches tough when you aren't getting a first goal or av. 2 per night. With the students back Fri against Rutgers should be a big night and hope they get some more production. x.com/PCFriarsMSoccer/status/1830726689305043096

Flurry of penalties midway through the first half -including a Red Card- doomed a good Rutgers team to a 1-0 loss tonight. Even with playing 11 on 10 Friars could only manage a goal, while dominating min's with the ball. For the last 10y or so a local player has been part of the team. Tonight's goal scorer is from Olneyville. x.com/PCFriarsMSoccer/status/1832220853662101940

URI scores in 43rd minute as URI player dribbles thru PC defense like sliced bread for unassisted goal
