Is my memory correct? Jimmy went off for 50 points at the Holiday Festival in New York, right? Think you're right, info. Was in NYC for that. Stayed at the Taft Hotel. We beat BC 91-86. I spent the weekend with a Regis girl. PIZZA,SODA,GRINDERS!!! Another oddity from back when is that photos of games which appeared in newspapers all had dark backgrounds as if they were playing at midnight. For years I had a clipping on my bedroom wall from the above game and it was all dark around Jimmy taking a shot.

Heard many stories about what a great he was.
Other things of note, aside from being the #1 NBA and ABA draft picks, he was also the last player selected in the 1967 NFL draft to New Orleans. And he was Jalen Rose's father.

With the use of actual film to take pictures in those old and not so well lit gyms, it was tough to get great black and white photos. I wasted lots of film taking black and white photos in the Civic Center and Schneider arena in the early 90s even.

another interesting story is the role Satch Sanders and Sam Jones played in helping to determine his future. Seems they lived in Roxbury and often times would hang out at the Boys Club shooting hoops, play some games and teach some of the kids basketball. they took a liking to Walker and also recognized that he was living on the edge. one of Sanders or Jones had a contact at Laurenburg and they convinced Walker's mother to get him out of town and down to Laurenburg. I may be a bit fuzzy on some details but thats what I remember the story being

Fellow posters, how fortunate you were to see him play. Seems his personal life after Providence was in tatters.
I recall from watching YouTube video that in his 50 point NIT performance he didn’t take a shot until 9 minutes into the game as the plan was to have his teammates score as the defense was focused on him. So, he scored those 50 points in 31 minutes.
Someone in attendance might confirm.

Dex, yes! It was! My conflating tournaments again. I tend to reminisce like Biden and Reagan…
When I watched Thompson-Ewing vs Carneseca- Mullins at the ‘new’ MSG, I don’t recall if the Holiday Tournament was still called the ECAC Holiday Tournament. See … conflating.
Hey, I’ve gotten to see many Friars play over the decades but not Jimmy Walker.

I was fortunate to watch Jimmy Walker play several times starting when he was a freshman. That year the freshman also included Dexter Westbrook who was about 6’7 and could leap through the building it seemed. I saw them both at Alumni Hall and the old Marvel Gym at Brown University. Games on tv were rare but the verbal pictures Chris Clark painted on radio made you feel you were sitting courtside. Over the years I have seen many great college players including Walton, David Thompson, Ewing, Mullen et al but none as dynamic and thrilling as Walker. Was he the best? That is in the eyes of the beholder and in my eyes….

My passion for PC hoops started with the Jimmy Walker led 1964-1965 team. Was in High School and watched them on TV and listened on the radio to Chris Clark. Greatest Friar basketball player ever. Why I wanted to attend PC. Same year I started watching them. I was only 9 years old and I was debating whether to be a PC fan or UConn fan because my Mom had just remarried a guy who played at UConn 10-15 years earlier so I had a decision to make. Jimmy Walker was the reason I chose to be a PC fan. Do you remember Walker’s older cousin Billy Blair, about 6’2 and seemed to have springs in his feet. Legend has it Blair’s mother is the one who turned Mullaney on to Walker. A vastly unappreciated player from the Walker years was Mike Riordon had a tremendous first step and huge stride. Mike went on to a fabulous pro career after a modest and some what overlooked PC career.

And as for Riordan, I always had the memory, rightly or wrongly, that he played as a forward at PC, but played guard for the Knicks. Anyone recall?
