PROVIDENCE — Longtime Providence Journal columnist Bill Reynolds — whose weekly “For What It’s Worth” column has been a Saturday staple for over 30 years — has fully retired.
Reynolds stepped down from full-time staff duties in August 2019 but continued to write his weekly columns until late last year. Along with former Journal staff writer Elizabeth Abbott, Reynolds is working on a compilation of many of his past columns, including his looks at the late Providence College star Marvin Barnes and Chris Herren, the former Durfee High School and Boston Celtics player.
“Bill Reynolds is a legend in Rhode Island, and his ‘For What It’s Worth’ column has been a big part of that. But just as big a part is the way that he treats everyone with dignity and respect,” said Michael McDermott, The Journal’s managing editor, and the former sports editor.
“When I came to The Journal nearly 20 years ago, Bill was one of the first people who made a point of introducing himself and getting to know me. And as I saw over and over again as his editor, Bill always gives the time to talk to people, to listen to people, from successful athletes, to everyday fans, to stressed-out colleagues who need a sympathetic ear. It’s the reason he is such a good journalist. I’ll miss reading him in The Journal but I’ll always consider him a friend and a role model.”
“For What It’s Worth” spanned sports, culture, books, movies, trivia and featured ongoing complaints about Connecticut tourists at South County beaches, jokes about the Independent Man statue that stands atop the State House, the General Assembly, and of, course, “Bunky” — the recurring everyman character.
COMING SUNDAY
Columnist Mark Patinkin pays tribute to Bill Reynolds.
