REPOST NOTE: Team Scrimmage
Much confusion ensued on this board after this post was originally made (on Tuesday, 7/11), over a Tweet that seemed to contradict what I had said by reporting the presence of a targeted Friar recruit at this unofficial team scrimmage. Thinking I had made a misidentification, I deferred, stood corrected, and changed my post. But then based on further information, and the supposedly conflicting Tweet’s deletion, it required a second look.
Because of all the withering blather, I decided to delete my original/corrected post and all the responses as subsequently, it was determined that my original post was correct; the recruit may have been on campus but he was not a participant in the scrimmage I witnessed.
So be it – things happen...
Watched our Friars in an hour long Captain’s Practice scrimmage Tuesday afternoon in, (thank God), air-conditioned Mullaney Gym. Here are some impressions – and do keep in mind that:
1. I make no claims at being any sort of an expert and
2. This is July 11, and this was a non-coached scrimmage.
All were present save Drew Edwards. Rodney Bullock did not play as he was resting a tweaked back – everyone else played.
Kyron Cartwright and Rodney Bullock are the team captains for this year.
Overall, everyone looked to be if decent shape – maybe not game playing shape but nobody was tugging at their shorts and they were playing at a good pace.
Kalif Young has dropped 25 lbs and looks really good – he is a fine young man who cracked up when I commented “Congrats Mr. Young, it sure looks like working out with Doctor Death has done you some good.” That was my attempt at humor referencing our excellent strength and conditioning coach Kenny White.
He seemed excited and ready to get going already.
Alpha Diallo is smooth – hitting shots at will from everywhere. He along with Young and Jackson lingered in the gym after the scrimmage for some extra shooting.
MAL is true to whatever his listed height is; looks very quick and is fitting in well although he is going through the “expected” Freshman team orientation along with tall drink of water Dajour Dickens – who is in need of additional strength but runs floor well.
Nate Watson looks to me as if he has been on this team for some time already even as it is way, way too early. He is impressively smooth and strong.
Holt is something else – just a tough hard nosed guy who plays bigger than he really is – all the time.
Maliek White looks stronger physically – he is a hard working no nonsense young man who quietly goes about his business.
Kyron is in charge.
Lindsay scored at will.
Jackson is a man on the court.
Planek and Fonts the two walk ons busted their butts throughout.
All in all we will be in good shape as we have plenty of capable parts on our team, (and this was with two players out). From what I saw we have talent, grit and looked solid even in this unofficial scrimmage.
