So I may have posted this once.
Used to see the Knicks in their previous practice facility. On days off from school in season I sometimes brought my boys to practice and usually Riley had closed door sessions. Sometimes afterward the players would sign autographs or upon leaving the building for their cars they would stop to sign for the kids. (Charles Smith would reply every time - "Not today fellas" without ever missing a step or turning his head.) Karma got him latter, as if he is ever remembered as a player, it will be for an embarrassing play rather than for any scoring he may have done.
But Patrick Ewing, of all the Knicks, actually stopped his black Mercedes, while his son was with him in the passenger seat, he rolled down the window and patiently signed for the young fans. He was a mensch to young fans. Maybe setting an example for his son.
Maybe they will coach together now as father/son.

I think this may be a good hire for them. If he gets the right assistants he could have that program back real soon. The roster isn't bad and he us one of the top 50 in nba history. I like it for them and the conference.

Not surprised pcdad - great anecdote.
Think Ewing's hire is good for Big East.
Obviously he must get solid staff and it will take time to turn around that program - for anyone coming in to Georgetown.
Ironically, the sense of underestimating his qualifications/ability could be his strongest suite. Say again, Ewing is a lot more capable than many seem to think. You don't become an associate head coach in the NBA unless you bring a skill set to the table.
The Big East needs a viable program at Georgetown - of course we want to beat them always but not as patsies.

Patrick Ewing proposed committing recruiting violation Originally posted on The Comeback | By Jesse Kramer | Last updated 4/7/17
New Georgetown head basketball coach Patrick Ewing may have committed a violation during an interview. Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports There was obviously going to be a learning curve for Patrick Ewing transitioning from NBA coaching to college coaching, but who knew it would be this bad? Ewing, whom Georgetown hired as its head coach last week, revealed some of his recruiting plans on Thursday’s episode of "The Dan Patrick Show," and they’re faulty.
Patrick asked Ewing if there would be a place for former Georgetown and NBA star Allen Iverson on his staff:“I’m not sure if there’s a place [for Iverson] on the staff, but he’s always welcomed. I’m gonna use him every way I can. There’s a kid down in Connecticut who’s a big fan of his. He committed to come to Georgetown, but when JT3 got let go, he wanted us to release him. I know he’s a big Allen Iverson fan. At some point, I’m gonna try to get him and Allen together either on the phone or in person.”
To sum up, Ewing will not hire Iverson on his staff, but he hopes to use Iverson as a direct recruiting tool. Doing so constitutes a recruiting violation, as somebody not on staff cannot be a permissible recruiter. The only exception to the rule is for a family friend or neighbor.
Here is Article 13.1.2 of the rulebook:
All in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts with a prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s relatives or legal guardians shall be made only by authorized institutional staff members. Such contact, as well as correspondence and telephone calls, by representatives of an institution’s athletics interests is prohibited except as otherwise permitted in this section.
I’m not sure if this makes it more or less concerning, but this clearly isn’t some slip of the tongue. Ewing just has no idea that sending Iverson to talk to a prospect (in this case top-50 point guard Tremont Waters) would break NCAA rules.

haven't I read stories of Jordan contacting guys for Carolina?
Christ, wasn't MAL bragging about meeting Kris Dunn during a visit?
Interestingly, I ran into someone who played (barely) at Gtown at the barbershop this morning. When I said, you finally got your coach...he responded "we got the guy that everybody wanted. Not sure if he's a coach"...He also asked me if it was true that Gtown contacted Cooley...

Interesting pick. He's been out of the coaching ranks for a while, so I suspect that Ewing will be targeting someone else (with current connections) as his primary recruiter.
