PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today that Providence College Women's Basketball Head Coach Phil Seymore is leaving the College to pursue other options. Seymore, who served as the head coach of the Friar women's team for seven seasons, is in the final year of his contract. Seymore posted an 88-120 record over seven seasons, including a 13-17 overall mark this year and a 5-11 record in BIG EAST action. A national search to find his successor will begin immediately.
"I want to thank Phil Seymore for all his dedication and commitment to our women's basketball program," Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll said. "Phil is an outstanding individual who always conducted himself with dignity and class. I want to wish Phil continued success in his future plans. He has improved our women's basketball program and steadily increased the talent level successfully over the last seven years."
In 2009-10, Seymore led the Friars to their first post-season appearance since 1992. His squad posted a 19-15 record and advanced to the Quarterfinal Round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) as the Friars recorded a 3-1 mark.
In addition to his seven seasons as the women's head coach, Seymore also served as assistant coach for the Providence College men's basketball team from 2000-05. During that time, he helped guide the men's team to two NCAA tournament appearances (2001 and 2004) and a NIT berth in 2003.
"I am excited for the next chapter in my life," Seymore said. "My family and I have spent the last 12 years as a part of Providence College. I will always cherish all the memories and friendships that have evolved during my time as a Friar. Most importantly, I appreciate the opportunity to work with so many wonderful student-athletes."
