That cooley has a tremendous eye for talent with each recruit and now see complaints that were playing 2 vs 5....which is it?

Great question.
My opinion is, and always has been, that you need to land and retain Top 100 recruits to consistently win at this level.
Waiting and hoping for the next Gomes or Cotton gives you the program we had for the decade before Cooley arrived.
One per year should do it if you retain them. None since Bentil.

Speaking of recruiting, Creighton just picked up their second ESPN Top 50 verbal for 2017 (Mich Ballock and Ty-shon Alexander).
Starting to fall behind the league on that front.

After the Kansas and Tennessee losses, the Kentucky board had many fans complaining that Coach Cal is bringing in the wrong type of recruits.

I think you can have a great eye for talent and still have a talent gap. It happens when you lose guys to transfer. In other words, when too many of those guys you successfully identified are exhibiting those skills in a uniform other than your own you have a supply-chain problem, not an evaluation problem.

and then there are the bluechippers you identify BEFORE they blow up only to lose them to a BCS5 Program with more national prominence from winning, more money and less scruples?
ie Abu, Spider Mitchell, Gabriel, Joseph, et al

I think Ed needs to be more aggressive(or lucky)with 5th year seniors. I mentioned previously that UK fans have turned very negative to the one-and-done routine this year because they don't have many upper-class men and their top 5 recruit is still struggling to make an impact. I bet you see Caldabble in the 5th year pool next year. Ironically, Pitino went out and solved that problem by adding 2-5th year guards to allow Snider and Mitchell to develop. I have seen a couple of their games where the announcers rationalized the "stealing" of these players from lesser programs who developed them, versus the benefit of allowing these kids to experience big-time college hoops. I wonder what they will say now?

Player retention...
Opposed to generalizing and saying that it's a problem for everybody, I think you look to identify ways to improve communication with players. At the very least, you put yourself in a position to better prepare for likely departures.
Every year Cooley has seemingly had his hand forced...

I think you can have a great eye for talent and still have a talent gap. It happens when you lose guys to transfer....well I suppose the transfer train goes both ways. The number 2 team in the country had 5 players transfer two years ago. Five.
Plus, I've read too many times (less lately) that the guys who bolted wouldn't have mattered this year. The freshmen get a hall pass for year 1 but the consensus is we're playing with 2 AAs playing 2 on 5.

And the 2 AAs were Top 100s. Repeat after me everyone, rankings matter, just ask Jay Wright.
What program lost 5 transfers?
