PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Thanks to the generous support of 3,134 donors, more than $6,060,000 in cash was raised for Providence College Athletics in the 2015 fiscal year through fundraising efforts. The number of donors and the dollars raised are records for the Friar Athletics Department.
These donations have made an immediate impact on the Friar athletic programs. The Friar athletic teams have had one of the most successful two-year runs in the history of the College. Each of the last two years, a team has captured an NCAA title.
In November 2013, the women’s cross country team won the NCAA Championship and in March, the men’s hockey team capture its first NCAA title. Under the leadership of President Rev. Brian Shanley, O.P. and Athletics Director Bob Driscoll, athletic fundraising has set a record each year and has grown from $200,000 to more than $6,060,000 in annual donations.
“When I meet with our coaches, we have the conversation of possibility,” Driscoll said. “We talk about what needs to happen for us to realize our vision and achieve our program goals. In every one of those conversations, there is a financial need that requires fundraised dollars. Thanks to the generous support of our alumni and fans, we have met many of those financial needs and as a result our student-athletes are better positioned for academic and athletic success.”
“I want to thank everyone who rallied around our program and helped us bring a national championship home to Providence,” Providence Men’s Ice Hockey Coach Nate Leaman stated. “We were the smallest school in the NCAA Tournament this year but we had the biggest team. As a donor and season ticket holder, you are a crucial part of our team and we proved this year that when we come together, nothing can stand in our way.”
“Seeing the impact that fundraising has on the experience of our student-athletes is what motivates us every day,” Senior Associate Athletic Director, Steve Napolillo said. “We rely on the generosity of the Providence College family and we have been fortunate to have so many alumni, parents and fans give selflessly of their time, talent and treasure. Your gifts allow us to prepare our student-athletes for success not only during their time as a Friar but long after they graduate.”
Providence College is honoring its centennial in 2017 with the most ambitious Capital Campaign in school history.
Our Moment: The Next Century Campaign for Providence College ties together the vision and mission of the College and provides opportunity to support every facet of student life. Providence College Trustees Bill Leary ’60 and Karl Anderson ’88 serve as the Co-Chairs of the Athletic Capital Campaign and their leadership and generosity has been instrumental in the unprecedented success of Friar Athletics.
