One reason for the combined uses is "political". In some quarters including faculty council lots of pressure on Father for all of the athletic investment.
While there has been significant academic investment including Ruane and now the business school there is always resentment fRon some academics about athletics.
While it is clear to me that BB is key to the long term ability of PC to recruit students willing and able to pay for a private education, some academics refuse to support Father's long term vision.
Father could run over these feelings but colleges are by nature collegialy run institutions.

The $2m increase in fundraising was the 2 gifts for the soccer/lacrosse stadium.
The BB facility is about finalized at $17 m with about $13 m needed to break ground.
Several million short right now of $13:m needed for go ahead.
Hoping to begin work next spring being optimistic about fund raising.

Just need $4m or so. ? One thing to remember is this project began as a $3/4 m court and now it is 2 courts, new coaches offices, new walk of fame, dining facility etc. Much of which was driven by Coach. $17 for men's hoops and another $13 m for the Development Center.

Here's a video tour of VCU's under-construction development center for men's and women's hoops. It's a $25MM project:
