But to leave for Gainesville?
Even if Dunn left?
Don't see it...
*
To walks point - it is true. Example of Gary Wiliams, shelf life, etc.is valid. And rare is that long tenure especially in this day and age of shifting conferences, trasitional player movements and of course, the instant gratification of the big $$$ deals...
Like Dunn's return, Cooley 'still has work to do...'
Do think charl hits on some solid stuff too - Cooley's situation is different providing it all "works out". no?.

Got nothing to do with working/not working....99% get fired.....Christ even Gary Williams was basically asked to leave...umd was dead...He brought them a nc...and under armor thought he should recruit better....I blame no coach for leaving before asked... But in my world, not working includes, but is not limited to, getting fired. For whatever reason it works/doesn't work. For whatever reason, including being fired. I did say earlier EC might not succeed, that he might be shown the door. I covered that contingency; just wording it differently. Hey, if he wants to leave because "it has always been my dream to be an investment broker in Honolulu", works/doesn't work for him or for the school, he can leave because he doesn't like the traffic in East Greenwich for all I would know in advance. Sometimes things work out; sometimes they don't. For him, for the school, for whatever the reason(s).

I guess I would put it this way. In the "ever since Pitino" era, Ed Cooley is the first coach I believed did not view Providence as a stepping stone. I was never surprised when a coach moved on before. They didn't come in advertising their "transient" status. They didn't have to. I thought Cooley genuinely wanted to do something here for Providence and the state. I don't think any previous coach felt that way at all. If it doesn't work, so be it. But I think he came here with that mind set. He also came when we were in the old BE. It's why I was so disappointed when the league finally broke up. We finally had a coach that would have PC fighting for NCAA births from the old BE. If this league trends down and can't compete nationally, it will be tough for Cooley to stick around. Hope to see him start landing some of the top recruits he wants so he still believes he can win big at PC. Yeah, well, there's one big fly in the ointment. If the league simply does not cut it. The schools did what it took to have excellent RPI's entering league play, which in turn led to a good number of tournament selections. Which the league then proceeded to waste by doing so poorly, most significantly our flagship #1 seed, the joke that was 'Nova. Number 1 seed! What a joke to loose in the Round of 32. All this league has to do is just keep on flopping in the Dance. Then, at least Cooley can say "hey, I wanted a national title, just like I told you. Unfortunately, this is bush league basketball. See you around, maybe next life".

Actually, if Cooley said he was moving on because he didn't like the traffic in RI, that I could fully understand! Or the roads, worst in the nation. Another good reason, lol...

I would be disappointed if he left THIS year had Dunn entered the draft. I'd remember what he told the fans at the Dunk when introduced, and I would feel a sense of betrayal. Because he told fans what they wanted to hear. And some believed him, took it as his word, rather then "what they all say". But it would still be none of my damn business if he left this year. He does not personally owe me a thing. Including any explanation. He could leave by saying "it's nobody's business. Don't ask". He could decide to enter a Buddhist monastery and seek enlightenment, forgoing the pursuit of a national championship for another lifetime. He can leave without the finger of blame from me. It isn't my place. It's none of my damn business what he does with his life. Regardless of disappointment, angst for the program, regardless, what EC does with his life is none of my business. Anymore then whether Dunn stayed or not was any of my business. No blame coming from me for what he does with his life.

But fans have a right to think that their coach only wants to coach their team. Unfortunately, their coach has been someone else's coach and will be again. It's how this business works. I hope Ed Cooley is here for 30 seasons...but I doubt we get that far.

This thread has developed into the biggest discussion on what-ifs, non-sequiturs and dart-throwing that I've ever read.
Jeez, take some Xanox. All 3 of you.
Enjoy Dunn being back, the excitement of an addition to the coaching staff, more recruiting drama and SUMMER!!!

As an avid fan, pretty easy to feel decisions made can actually be commented upon as if one were somehow owed an explanation, and one can express disappointment, surprise, and even anger if the decision disagrees with one. If Cooley left this year because Dunn left, I'd be very surprised. At least. But remove the emotional involvement that comes naturally to any fan of any team, and I can only acknowledge it's really none of my business. I guess season ticket holders might feel they had a stake given the $$ they've invested to see a team coached by EC, and not someone else. But, in the last analysis, EC ain't a personal friend, and even then, it would not be my business if he upped and left for any reason whatsoever.

I am with you here Thumper.Just imagine if Dunn had left how depressed some of these folks would be when they allow themselves to get into such a lather over this pure figments of their imaginations There is NO indication that Mr. Ed Cooley is going anywhere else anytime soon. One thing that must get done soon, however---is the basketball practice facility. If those who are worries want to help keep Coach here for a long[er] time----donate to this very important project that Coach has consistently and publicly said he wants/needs. We have just experienced two very good seasons ,winning the BET for the first time in 20 years and making the Big Dance in back-to-back seasons for the first time in many moons.Chill and enjoy guys. The Friars have a chance to be very good in 2015-2016 with a talented nucleus of Dunn,Bentil,Chukwu and Lindsey---with Frosh and Bullock who have the potential to contribute early also.
