Freshman year attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah and led the freshman team in scoring and assists. Transferred to Providence College and was the starting guard alongside Jimmy Walker (drafted #1 by Baltimore Bullets) and Mike Riordan (NY Knicks). Providence won the last Holiday Festival tournament held in old Madison Square Garden in 1966 and Stu had 2 good scoring games. 1968 Stu was selected to the Jewish All-American basketball team and selected the Jewish Athlete of the year in Rhode Island. That same year Providence was eliminated in the semi finals at the NIT also in Madison Square Garden. Stu was a starter on the 1966 Pan American Maccabiah Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil along with Barry Liebowitz and Dave Newmark and won a gold medal. In 1969 Stu also started for the U.S. team along with Ronnie Watts in the Maccabiah Games in Israel and the team won a silver medal. Stu was a great shooter and playmaker with tremendous jumping ability
