No doubt. I guess what I am getting at is I just want to see that fearless, confident Batts on the floor. One who is not intimidated by anyone. That is all I meant. But I definitely could have said it better. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I think if he took the shots with his confidence he does not miss 7 out of 8 and that is what i am getting at. Batts NEEDS to play like he is capable. As you say - End of story. Ok... So I will now ask, is it possible that Batts is playing at what he is capable of? Was last year's play above his capabilities? Almost like when Brady Anderson hit 50 homers in a season or when a lifetime .260 hitter hits .300 once in a 10 year career? Well..Brady Anderson wasn't exactly on the level, yankeefriar. Batts is averaging 12 and 7 right now. I think those are respectable numbers for any big man. This time last year, however, he was 16.2 and 7.5 (as of 1/2/13). Now if he was at 12 and 7 with Carson Desrosiers contributing on the offensive end then you say "great, two big men making a difference." But that has not happened. Desrosiers averaged 4 ppg in each of his two seasons at Wake Forest. He is currently averaging 4.8 ppg this season. He is out there for defense more than anything else. I am sure you see this. So now with Carson at his average, added to Batts' 12, we arrive at Batts' 16 ppg from last season. So that should be alarming. I think Henton and Harris now need to step out more and take the 3-point shot, which then tells Batts that he needs to be in the paint and when he gets the ball he has his back to the basket, unable to attack the way he would like. I think he hates the way he is being used - whether its fair or unfair - and, again I am sure you see this too - he sulks up and down the court. He has reverted back to Keno's Kadeem. Kadeem scored double figures in 15 Big East games last season, including the loss to Cincy in MSG. In more than half of those 15 games, Batts went for 17+. So we need him to get back to that form. I mentioned on twitter - and this board - that during Kadeem's Friar career he has scored 20+ points in 12 games. In those 12 games the Friars are 10-2. Kadeem is one of the better big men in this conference. He needs to go out there and go for it. So, is Kadeem playing to where he is capable? No, I think he is capable of playing a hell of a lot better. But I could say the same for Bilal Dixon - who one high-ranking PC athletics member once said "could be the best player on the floor if he wanted to" and same goes for Randall Hanke who had a syndrome where he was nearly 7 feet tall and played like he was a 6 foot center.

Hanke was a great offensive player, problem was he gave up more points on the defensive end than he scored on the offensive end. Seemed like a big man was getting a career high against us every night.
Back to Batts, I am inclined to believe a couple of things.
1. Last year was a "career year". He has now played about 3 full seasons in a PC uniform. Fr., 1/2 soph, JR, and half Sr. 2/3 of them have been what we have seen thus far YTD. 2. Heart isn't in it. The talk of him not coming back after last season is my reasoning here. 3. Opposing teams game planning. Batts is a very easy guy to defend, especially when he is not hitting the 10-15 footers. He has no hops, and is methodical. As a defender, hold your ground, don't leave feet until he leaves his. How many shots has he had blocked inside of 5 feet this year? A ton and certainly more than the last couple of years.

Fair point about him wanting to leave and then deciding not to. I also think it stinks to see that Batts did have 27 and 12 vs. Seton Hall last season and not pull off a similar game the other day with Teague sitting out.
I want Batts to succceed, but maybe, as '71 makes the point on the "Solution" thread, Desrosiers needs to be used more in the offensive scheme.

Poor Batts may be on pace for the record of getting shots blocked by his defender. Might be a good idea to upfake a little and try to get fouled by a dope or even go past the rim hoping it screens the swatter and makes it harder to block. Must be maddening for the staff.

...I'll bet he's really dejected that he finds himself with no point guard to get him the ball when and where he wants it.
He didn't plan on that when he decided to return for another year.

You can't and won't always get the ball when/where you want it, even with your regular PG. You have to be able to adjust and make a basketball play. Sounds like my son's HS baseball coach yelling at SS and 3B for not hitting the 1st baseman in the chest with their throws everytime.

I can't figure out Batts...maybe he needs a sports psychologist.
He was very good not great last year.
This year good seems like a bridge too far.
Does anyone actually think we can win even 6 league games if he doesn't shape-up?

I believe we can win six league games if "Batts doesn't shape-up". It's just that at least two of them won't come until next year.

Batts plays to his average over the last 5 and we're looking at a max of 4 BE Ws and most likely a dfl finish....
...but I'll be able to kill cotton so it'll all be good...
