Those certainly were the days. That 63 team ran the fast break as well as any PC team that I have ever seen. Of course they had the rebounding needed in Thompson, Kovalski and Stone and the guys out front in Ernst and Flynn to finish it off. Ernst just always knew what to do with the ball once he got to the top of the key. Almost never made a mistake. Flynn was the finisher who could go to the basket or stop and pop if the opponent had caught up with them and was at the basket. Stone who was hobbled by a knee injury amazingly often caught up with the two guards and filled in the other lane to close out the break. School was closed down completely for over a week during the 63 NITs and almost all of the students were in New York and stayed for all the games. The game against Miami with Rick Barry was probably the most memorable with Barry and Flynn going toe to toe and Flynn winning out in overtime. Think he scored in the 30s that game. When the Saturday championship game was over we went to a bar to watch the NCAA final (held the same day as the NIT finals in those days) between Cincy and Loyola of Chicago and we were all convinced that the Friars could have beaten either one of those teams. We were obviously prejudiced in our opinion but that opinion was shared by many national writers in the press at the time as well. Dreaming of the day when our current Friars match some of the accomplishments of those teams!

Stating this for the umpteenth time - at that moment the NIT was BIGGER than the NCAA. At least it was on the East Coast, particularly in NYC. Looking back, 1963 was probably the high point in that perception as after that the emergence of national television, etc. changed the landscape and March madness began to roll out as the tourney o' champions.

If I remember correctly the game vs Miami was the one Barry was called for a foul, slammed the ball down so hard it looked like it was going through the roof & as T'd out of the game. Barry had quite the temper. Flynn was unreal in that game.

We had a good lead but Miami was making it real close when Barry fouled Flynn and blew up when the call went against him. Flynn went to the line and made the free throw for the tech and then the two for the foul and the game was pretty much over. Flynn ended up scoring in the high 30s

mike, . while I realize you weren't born then, and thus missed our Two National Championships, feel free to ask questions about their time at PC and the history they made together.
I hope you will share this with my friend Tom and post any remembrance worthy of this great message board led by our GREAT MOD and FOUNDER, none other than wtm97 himself a refugee from another board once upon a time

WTM, you are correct. Subsequently the NCAA decided to increase its field of teams effectively diminishing the stature of the NIT.

ThrowBack Thursday courtesy of PFB pic.twitter.com/LLFlEUYPllOh boy those were the days my friend...the mid to late 70s. Throw in Sonar, Dwight, and Cooper and we won and entertained. Anyone besides me at The Dunk (Civic Center) Dec 1976 when we beat No. 1 Michigan in 2OT? I give it the nod over the Hoyas game as the greatest ever played in the old barn.

Dex what are we drinking today? I just poured myself a Jack and Ginger Ale. I'm going to wash down a few of the pills left over from my wife's breast augmentation surgery.
I'm glad I'm not drinking alone today. Thanks Dex! Bottoms up !
