if they wanted to get away from calipari's way, this is a great hire.

I think the point is Pope was the 6th choice or so. There was a time when any coach would be thrilled to coach at Kentucky, now they were turned down by multiple candidates. That was previously unthinkable.

And its.....Mark. Pope. From BYU Hahahahahahhahaa. How the mighty have fallen. DMAC!!! Obviously you were not impressed with what he's accomplished at BYU, YOUR NOT PAYING ATTENTION. He is exactly what that program needs, he's not high maintenance! Research him before you continue. He's an outstanding coach who has a terrific style of play at both ends of the floor that all would care to play and fans would like to observe. Also, he knows what it takes, he's been there. Terrific hire. Time will tell. However at first glance this is not a splash hire for the supposed top or one of the top blue blood programs of cbb. 0 tourney wins. Not one of their tier 1 options. The fanbase is furious. If I'm Kentucky and if the program is where they thought it was, I'm having my pick of coaches who've been there (not players). I want a guy who's been deep into March as a coach. Again speaking as a hypothetical where you are an elite program. This to me says Kentucky has fallen to earth. Again let's check back in 3 years or so and see. Maybe it's the reset they need but to me this says their program as not as lofty as it was.

I think Kentucky didn't want to be seen as being turned down multiple times - quickly turning to a guy they know will take it.

I agree DMAC.Pope may be an okay coach.But---he only got the offer after many public rejections from other more well known, proven and successful coaches. He is far from the flashy big time coach I am sure that Kentucky and its fans were expecting, especially with the money they were able to offer. I predict a tough tenure for him in Lexington.

Terrific hire. Pope is also a Kentucky alum, won a NCAA championship, played in the NBA for 6 years and has 15 years coaching experience. He might work out nicely and settle down the program's success that's been mired in the Big Dance for a few years. Give him a chance. clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-rick-pitino-delivers-mark-pope-endorsement-wildcats-jobPIZZA, SODA, GRINDERS!!!

Kentucky, Villanova fans are hard to please. Name the program. Pleasing fans seems worse to me in big time college football though. I suppose the fan base that financially supports its college basketball team has the ‘right’ to voice its displeasure with the signing of new coach they deem an underwhelming choice.
