ROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Hampton in its 2023-24 season opener, 76-46, on Nov. 7 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. It marked the first career head coaching victory for Erin Batth, who took over the program last March.
NOTES:
• Olsen finished the night with a career-high 25 points on 9-11 shooting from the field and a 7-7 performance from the foul line. She also hauled in a game-high eight boards and added two assists and two blocked shots.
• Efosa scored 21 points, eclipsing the 20-point mark for just the second time in her career. She shot 6-7 from the floor and was 8-9 from the foul line.
• Olsen and Efosa are the first duo to score 20+ points in the same game since March 21, 2019 [Jovana Nogic (27) and Mary Baskerville (22) vs. Hartford].
• Morales Romero posted 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in her first game as a Friar.
• Kylee Sheppard dished a career-high eight assists in the game and the Friars finished with 19 assists as a team.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Friday, Nov. 10 against Vermont (1-0). Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.

Breath of fresh air in Friartown

Decided to make the drive up for this one. Decent crowd for the game.

Friars size was evident against Hampton. Made a concerted effort to get the ball inside and drive to the basket for layups versus settling for outside shots.

Hampton couldn't handle Olsen on the inside.

Lot of nice passing.

Defense was very active. Mostly m-to-m with switching off. Some full court pressing.

The girl from Spain was good, very composed, played point along with Sheppard. Both out there at same time most of the game.

I didn't stay for the entire game but I think everyone played in the game.

I suspect Vermont will be more competitive. Game is up against hockey home game against Northeastern.

Good overall start for Erin and her team.

What was a concern to me is the fall off in production once the starters left the floor. A bit of a scoring drought in fact.
If anyone can comment on that I would appreciate it.

PS: Nariah Scott (ankle) and first-year guard Sahana Kanagasabay were DNPs. SK is working her way back from a torn ACL in her right knee.

PPS: FYI: URI pasted Sacred Heart (a team which played in the NCAA Tournament last season) by a score of 91-40. That one will be an uphill battle for sure.

Next WBB game is against Vermont which returns two First Team All-America East and a third team AE player. The Catamounts were an NCAA tournament team last year and also boasts the reigning AE Coach of the Year Alisa Kresge.
