ok, so after taking the usual pounding from posters on both boards, including a few not even worth the time of day, I decided to head back to alumni hall to watch the guys playing pickup for a second time. hopefully there will be more visits because it is really enjoyable seeing these guys go at it on the court. kris came over and said hello, and I met and chatted with quadree, zeke, and ricky. all of them very nice guys, and extremely happy to be at providence. the most noticeable thing to me this year is the difference in team speed. led by kris, who is a blur on the court, faster than last year, this group can fly. kyron, drew, tyree, all of the guards were buzzing all over the court. ben looks like a pro out there, and his first few steps towards the hoop were impressive. quadree, for a large man, was able to stay with smaller guys, and should only improve as he gets to the coach's desired weight. jalen looks like a new person out there, and from a distance looks taller.
this team can shoot, lights out sometimes. speaking with zeke, he says his shot is improving, and that he,
jalen, ben, kris, and ricky are just unconscious at times. watching them go at it, I can believe that, as shot after shot was drained. you might be surprised at how good a player tyree has become.
on one play today, quadree got the ball turned, and drove several steps, knocked ben away and laid the ball in. his size will be beneficial this season. he also has extremely good hands, and can get boards. jalen showed the ability to final put the ball into the hoop consistently, and has gotten vastly better handling the ball. he exhibited this in full court handling, and even driving to the hoop through traffic.
I fully expect to get blasted by the usual haters for being positive about the team. it is summer time and the players are playing amongst themselves. it is a very likable group, and they do look good, very good.. sorry I csnnot be more negative for your taste, WALK. others may be able to give you what you want if they ever get to a practice, but I doubt it.
my thought for the best player outside of kris would be ben. his shooting out to 20 feet was pretty darn impressive.
ok, let the hating begin...

Good report. Hopefully Ben does not get too comfortable away from the hoop because I think he will need to spend a lot of time under it.

No one wants to blast you but, really, players look like pro's, guys "fly" and shoot lights out? But not a single, solitary unenthusiastic review? This is what hurts you my man. I mean, I love ya, can't get enough of your passion and I don't think I quite qualify as a "hater" but some critical analysis is needed if you're gonna spend the time watching the team and reporting here. My advice: everything you see needs to be weighed against a bigger, more talented, "slower" BE season. You also have to account for being closer to the floor and thus seeing things out of ordinary perspective. Each player should be held against, perhaps, a previous player you've witnessed in other summer years. That's a healthy way to do it. Who looks better than CD, Harris, Fortune etc....and who doesn't?! The latter protects your objectivity. Take it for what it's worth.

I fear these practices are like the infamous Pro-Am games where everyone drains and drives at will. Any "D" on exhibit out there?

I was also at PC today and caught the pick up games. Just a couple of things to add on to what pcballboy already said.
The first thing I noticed was how small we are. If you take away Kyron and maybe Kris everyone else looks just about the same height. One or two of our 6'8 guys may really be 6'7
Both Council and Fazekas can really shoot it. Impressive.
Lindsey did indeed dribble the ball more today than he did the entire last season. He looked good out there.
At one point Kyron went up for a rebound and slammed it back through the hoop in one motion. I did not realize he had that kind of hops.
Bullock did not play while I was there. Probably smart to stay away from unorganized games at this point in his recovery.
Quadree does indeed get up and down the court very well for someone his size. Not a liability in thar aspect at all. I just worry that he is going to have a hard time getting his shot off when he goes against taller players (which will probably be most guys he faces).
Kris Dunn was doing Kris Dunn like things out there. Going to be fun watching him this year.
Pick up games are fun to watch but you can only learn so much.

Kyron can really get up. People are sleeping on him. If he develops that jumper he can be really good. He will be ready to run point for us 30+ mins per game after Dunn leaves. Bank ok that. He'll get plenty of run this year too obviously, I think he starts with Dunn.
I'm interested in Chambers. If he is still here, with all the guards we have, maybe there's a reason.

Thanks ballboy for the report. I expect to hear glowing things about guys this summer and honestly if someone looks bad in this type of environment then they shouldn't be on the team.

I forgot to add that bullock was on the sidelines watching the action. he can workout now, but is 4-8 weeks away from playing in pickup games.

This Team will over achieve because Cooley has already lowered the expectations it was a master stroke. Yes we Don't have a 7 foot guy on the team. But we have skilled players.the 3 pt shooters will make teams want to match up and play small. Ben will have a breakout year. By this time next year he will be a 3 development wise he is supposed to expand his game. If we doing everything as a team we will be fine. It's also good news to hear Quadree at 280 moving well for a man his size. These things I found out that he is incredibly strong you won't find too many players able to move him. So that means on offense when he posted up he is there to stay. Look for him to grab a lot of rebounds because good position and hands are key for that I been told he has both. On Defense you won't find many backing him down so they will be forced to shot turn around jump shots. Look for him to use power against height. a tall skinny player will be move against his will. his different body type will be a match up problem on Both sides. But the one thing I keep thinking about and smiling is. Q and KD in the pick and roll will be a thing of beauty. you not getting around that wide body combine with KD speed will be a nightmare. Most importantly Coach Cooley has said he will change his coaching style to fit his team. I really like that game plan.

I appreciate any and all reports on how our players are looking and playing. Thanks to all who share. We are three months ahead of Midnight Madness and 4 before a meaningful game.Speaking for myself---I like having something to read on our team from fellow Friar crazies.

Some people respond well to thoughtful advice, others simply stay stuck in their own traffic jam and refer to it as "not much" help. Got it.
