Big East Neighborhoods

A lot is said about Big East cities & media markets - but not a lot about the neighborhoods these schools inhabit.

I know Villanova is on the Main Line 12 miles northwest of Philly, and is in a very affluent neighborhood. While that's a good thing in one sense, it also can isolate the college and its students in suburbia.

Wondering if anyone has insights on other colleges in the Big East. What are their pros vs cons when it comes to recruiting basketball players?


If all things were equal on the basketball and academics sides - how would you rank the Big East Neighborhoods for recruiting potential?

Interesting topic. I've been to a few Big East campuses and what I find interesting is how much they all have in common. Seton Hall and Georgetown are both in residential suburban neighborhoods right outside a "big city". Seton Hall being in South Orange, right outside of Newark and G'Town obviously being just outside of DC. St. John's main campus is is also in a residential area but it is actually in NYC, although not in Manhattan. Ironically though, they do have a Manhattan and Staten Island campus. St. John's off campus area has more of a commercial strip than Seton Hall's or G'Town's, but it will never be mistaken for Manhattan. I've only been to Villanova once but as already stated, it too is located in a suburb outside of a major city.

I did some research! Distances are based on mapquest biking directions to city centers!

Butler: 6 miles from Indianapolis, IN city center (Butler-Tarkington)
Creighton: 1 mile from Omaha, NE city center (just outside business district)
DePaul: 1 mile from Chicago, IL city center (Lincoln Park)
Georgetown: 3 miles from Washington, DC city center (Georgetown)
Marquette: 1 mile from Milwaukee, WI city center (University Hill)
Providence: 2 miles from Providence, RI city center (Smith Hill)
Seton Hall: 4 miles from Newark, NJ city center (South Orange)
St. John's: 12 miles from New York, NY city center (Jamaica, Queens)

Are these the distances for the campus to the arena?  If so DePaul seems too close, isn't AllState Arena like 45 mins away from the campus?  If it's the campus to the actual city then St. John's is misleading since it is in NYC although not in Manhattan, which I am guessing is what was intended.

It's distance from campus to city centers - as determined by mapquest. So for DePaul I asked for directions to Chicago, IL.
