espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/87680/3-point-shot-unlv-takes-another-offseason-hit(excerpt) The Big East confirmed that its conference schedule will be released next week. The old Big East was always one of the last conferences to release its schedule because of so may pro arenas in the conference. That hasn't changed with Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Marquette, DePaul, Villanova and Georgetown all dealing with other tenants. The three new schools -- Butler, Creighton and Xavier -- have the most control over dates in their arenas. The conference is hoping to build rivalries and will protect one rivalry for the final weekend of the regular season. But the conference wouldn't say which one until the schedule is finalized. The teams haven't been notified yet of which rivalry was protected for the final weekend of the regular season.

Meanwhile... Home-and-home rivalries take a hitBy Dana O'Neil | ESPN.com When does Kentucky head to Knoxville for revenge after its Black Saturday date against Tennessee last season, when the Wildcats lost by 30? When can NC State fans welcome Duke, upset by the Wolfpack a year ago, back to Raleigh? Can Purdue fans, with a highly regarded recruiting class, get a sweep of hated Indiana by winning not only in West Lafayette but also in Bloomington? Go ahead and search for the dates. We have time. Nothing yet?Don't worry. It's not your eyesight. The games aren't there. As one Kentucky fan wrote succinctly and accurately on a message board, "I, for one, think it sucks. I understand superconferences, etc., but I also like tradition." Ah, tradition, a quaint notion about as en vogue as short basketball shorts. "It's disappointing, but it's one of those things where there's really no answer to it," NC State coach Mark Gottfried said. "This is the new normal." "Football has to be right. It just does." (think quote is from Purdue Coach Matt Painter?) Even if everything else is wrong. Home and home and a balanced schedule are both good things that our Big East will have.
Will help in building rivalries and "revenge" games.Also---will make the standings more representative--since everyone will be playing every other team twice.

What do you think the 5 "Rivalry Games" will be?
Here are my guesses.
1. Xavier---Butler
2.Marquette--Creighton
3. Seton Hall--DePaul
4. St. Johns --Providence
5. Villanova---Georgetown

Fans enjoy the home-and-home but for now it looks like the networks prefer conferences with more teams that cover larger areas of the nation. It will be interesting to see if Fox puts some pressure on our new league to add two more teams.
By the way, what exactly was Katz saying when he wrote that the conference would "protect" a rivalry the last weekend of the season?

Yeah I wasn't sure I understood that either drairf, does it mean 1 rivalry total or 1 rivalry for each team? Confusing.

dmac80, I initally interpreted it as only one game, but maybe he meant 5 different rivarly games as pc1971 indicated above. That would make more sense.
I think either PC or Seton Hall will get stuck with DePaul. I could see SH edging us for the St. John's game due to the NY/NJ connection.
St. John's and Georgetown are the most high profile of the East Coast teams. I'd love to get St. John's or Villanova, but could see us getting shipped to the midwest for a game that really isn't a rivalry.

based on where the programs are I think the list PC1971 posted makes sense, however I could see PC getting a crappy matchup until we prove ourselves more. We'll see. Gonna be a lot of fun. Can't wait.

I agree that what Katz wrote was not clear.
For fun---still wanted to pick the 5 games.

Yeah, I'm guessing SH or DePaul. Best case is Villanova. I think they will match G'Town with St. John's.

Villanova---Georgetown Can't see PC getting a high profile rivarly game such as SJU. GTown is a natural rival for the Johnnies. My guess would be DePaul or The Hall. Butler - Creighton Marquette - Xavier PC - DePaul Nova - Hall St Johns - GTown
