UMass will visit the Dunk the following season.

Good. This is the type of building block scheduling we will need to claw our way into "respectability".

A solid slate of Road and Neutral Court games next season. Good for the RPI (if we can win some of them).
Road: URI UMASS
Neutral: Kentucky Vanderbilt (Possibly La Salle, Maryland and/or others)

This then from John Rooke's always informative Thinking Out Loud...
Looks as if the Friars are nearing completion of their non-league schedule for next year, as UMass has been added as an away game (Amherst, MA) for next season…and the return to the Dunk comes the following year. PC played UMass in Puerto Rico last November, and lost on a tip-in at the buzzer. Vermont and Maine are also apparently on the schedule, and of course URI is there as well. What, no UConn or UNH? UConn said no thanks…
• If the list stands – barring any changes – it looks to be a decent lineup of teams in and out of conference. Brown and URI in-state, Fairfield and Yale from CT, UMass, Vermont, Maine, Boston College, Kentucky and three in St. Thomas (Vanderbilt and possibly LaSalle, Maryland).
Add to this mix home and home match-ups within the Big East (Creighton, Xavier, Butler included) and you have the potential to make some noise. Provided you win, of course…

UConn says no thanks....
Won't be the last of the Friars former Big East opponents to say "no thanks".
New Matchups and new rivalries are coming as Providence finds its new level of competition.

Not sure Cooley's goal is a new level of competition. The staff is making calls to every major program in the nation looking to schedule home/away series. They might not be successful at securing the games, but their goal is to maintain a high level of competition.

I think Providence can say farewell to some teams it may have played as Former Big East opponents, unless there is something in it for those former opponents. (Dare I suggest, unless THEY grace us with their presence). There is little attraction for UConn, ND, Louisville, Pitt, UWVA, Syracuse to schedule PC going forward. The next time we see those teams is in a post-season tournament. (That would be an accomplishment).
In contrast to PC's lot, Georgetown, because of its strength and reputation, would have a better chance to schedule those very same opponents, as it would be deemed mutually beneficial to play one another. Georgetown might even decide to turn down some of those schools as Pitt and WVA for instance or even opt not to schedule such heady opponents as Syracuse or Louisville.
Nova and ND may decide to schedule one another but I don't think ND would necessarily schedule PC as mutually beneficial for its RPI or as a "good win". There is more benefit to PC by getting a "good win" against ND.

I think most here knew that would happen to our Friars pcdad and I agree with you - but UCONN?
They should play us IMHO...

WTM97 and all,
Sorry for stating the obvious to all of us... The new Big east has it pros and cons for PC. Fill in your own list of each.
As far as UConn, perhaps they should play us but they can call the shots, not us. Perhaps they do not want to risk losing to PC as they regularly have.

pcdad, I was not disagreeing with you at all. I was simply pointing out that Cooley's desire is not to find a new level of competition. Some in the past have indicated that they were excited to see PC play a less demanding schedule. I, and Cooley, do not want that. However, the reality is it will probably be the case because it's tough for PC to schedule games against the top programs.
And I agree, Georgetown, St. John's and Villanova are more desirable for the power programs and the biggest reason is that they sit in good recruiting cities. Even DePaul has the Chicago market as an attraction.
PC has the New England preps, but schools can get this by visiting UConn (and all ACC schools already get this by visiting BC).
I can see UConn not wanting to play us because a PC with a weak schedule is good for UConn. They want to own New England basketball, so why help PC have an attractive schedule? UConn is able to schedule the likes of Florida, etc.

It will be interesting to see if UConn maintains its attendance in the AAC

Uconn = national program
PC = something a lot less than that...we have no business thinking we can call scheduling shots with anyone outside of RI and it's proving out now. We bring nothing to the table. It's too bad b/c with cooleys upgrade in talent we'd finally have legit shots to win more than an occasional game against big name opponents.

Honestly we must win, put a couple of sweet sixteen runs together over the next 5 years and scheduling will be much easier.

Yeah I think PC has been down long enough that they are currently in a tough spot because they present what amounts to either a 'ho-hum win' or 'bad loss' for the more powerful programs, and PC is good enough to actually beat them sometimes so for the power programs its a lose lose to play PC. PC as others have stated needs to get back to the NCAAs, and then once there win a game or two and do this for a couple of seasons in a row or 2 of every 3 years then they'll see programs eager to schedule them. It's a tough battle.

Well said dmac80. And that is why this home and home with UMASS is potentially pivotal for PC as we try to build a decent OOC to add to the new Big East slate. Along the way, we may have to accept some away games at tough places. If the Big East plays out as hoped some of that will not be needed.
It is a time of change and we must adapt to remain in the mix…
