First Segment:
- Always good to start the season. Excited to be back to work with "a lot to clean up"
- CCSU game had a lot of unknowns going in, given lack of experience with this roster and limited time practicing together.
- CCSU isn't a complete walk-over. Focus should always be to play our best. Credit to CCSU as a group that has stuck and played together for multiple seasons. Jordan Jones (#23) could play in the BE
- Determining early season schedule starts with available dates at the AMP (not in control), then seeing who has similar dates available and what multi-season commitments PC has locked into.
- Home and Home vs a Big12 team will begin next season.
- Kim and staff are finding that there is some reluctance for teams to come in for OOC games.
- Important time of year for our young bigs to develop. Important that they get game time and game experiences. Disappointed in Christ's turnovers, and the fact that Anton didn't get opportunity for PT vs. CCSU
Second Segment:
- Joined by Jabri Abdur-Rahim.
- Choice to come to PC had to do with familiarity with some of the staff and the appeal of Kim's style/pace of play and opportunity improve.
- Feels that he brings experience playing in big time games; plays "the right way". Wants to improve defensively and become a lockdown defender.
- To be a better defender, has to be "more intentional". Watches films of practices and games to observe/learn/adjust
- His Dad (as was the case with Devin Carter) played in the NBA and is Jabri's biggest influence - instilling the importance of hard work. Got to see his dad play in his final years. Jabri likes having his father at games.
- Playing in front of fans is "the best feeling ever". Gets him really excited. Hadn't play for some time given pre-season injuries.
- Injuries are a part of basketball, but disappointed that so many of the players didn't get the opportunity to play much together before the regular season started. No excuses however as opponents don't care.
Third Segment:
- KMac joins the show.
- Start of the season seems to have come real early. 5 competitive BE games took place on opening night.
- Game to game, important to carry lessons learned forward - particularly with so many new players. Kim scrubs every single game looking for what worked/didn't work. The "standard" doesn't change with each opponent
- Kim: aside from undisciplined fouls, the defense was good vs. CCSU. Some of the offensive play was "downright bad". Too many undisciplined turnovers
- Regarding only 3 BE teams in last season's NCAAs: Every coach's strategies are different. Simply "need to win". Don't put faith in the hands of the Selection Committee by finding self on The Bubble.
- KMac thinks that our schedule is perfect, given the composition of the team this season.
- Getting the team to "gel" involves the expectation of "consistency to the standard". Non-negotiable defensive/offensive expectations which the staff goes over and over again. "The Bench is a great teacher"
- Staff doesn't have a lot from which to scout OOC teams. First few games are the toughest, particularly when they can't attend and watch an upcoming opponent's secret scrimmages.
Fourth Segment:
- Justin Fernandez joins the show.
- Prepared and ready to impact games after sitting out last season
- Good experience watching new teammates and style of BE play from the bench last year.
- Kim considers Justin a really good shooter/athlete who has a very serious approach to the game.
- Felt good to see Justin sustain an undercut to his surgically repaired knee without injury while going for a loose ball vs. CCSU.
- During the rehab process, Justin got a lot of time in working on his shooting and learning how to impact winning without having to score.
- Fernandez is most excited to play/win. His favorite teammate thus far is Anton Bonke, who he developed a bond with while both sat out last season.
Final Segment:
- Stonehill is another opportunity to learn more. Have a good guard (Josh Morton) who transferred in.
- Important for our players to pick up from what was learned vs. CCSU. Continue to build on ball security and objective of getting better shots. Way too many turnovers in first game.
- Minutes restriction for certain players vs. CCSU. Will talk with the medical team to determine whether minute restrictions need to carry forward.
- Disappointed that Mela, Bonke, and Delaurie didn't get the opportunity to play in our first game, but hoping they'll get time vs Stonehill on Saturday.
- Kim was happy and proud that team found a way to win vs. CCSU.
