What's noticeably absent from this: renewing some of the old rivalries with St. John's, Georgetown, Seton Hall and Villanova.

Spinal surgery gives UConn's Hurley new outlook
Associated Press
HARTFORD, Conn. -- UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley says he spent his life believing that when it came to his health, he was bulletproof.
That was before he was told by doctors in August that he had a degenerative spinal condition that could have left him paralyzed.
Hurley returned to work full-time Wednesday, less than two weeks after he had surgery to replace two disks in his neck with artificial ones. He expects to make a full recovery but says that as health scares go, this was terrifying.
"I started worrying and having a lot of anxiety about my health and my ability to get back to being myself," he said. "You start playing worst-case scenarios in your head."
Hurley said doctors told him the condition was partly hereditary and partly the result of years of the wear and tear associated with being a lifelong athlete.
UConn coach Dan Hurley said Wednesday that he has a new perspective after undergoing surgery to replace two disks in his neck. Without the surgery, doctors told him a hard fall or bump could have left him paralyzed. Matthew Visinsky/Icon Sportswire He said he was hoping to deal with the discomfort and tingling he was feeling through physical therapy or maybe an injection, but doctors quickly told him that he needed immediate surgery and that any hard fall or bump could leave him paralyzed.
He had the surgery on Sept. 6, with the doctor using an incision in his throat to get to his spine. He said he was told that for experts, it's a relatively routine procedure.
The 46-year-old coach said he felt better immediately but has some restrictions for the next month, such as being prohibited from flying or lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds.
Hurley, known for his animated coaching style, said he has kept recruits informed and is very confident the situation won't have any long-term effects on his ability to do his job the way he has always done it.
However, he said his first major health issue has changed his perspective on life.
"How important my faith is to me was reinforced. How important my family is to me was reinforced," he said. "And just how important I am to my players, to not just succeed and excel in their careers. My true sense and purpose as a coach came into much clearer focus for me."
His players gave him a warm welcome back on Wednesday. He said that meant a lot to him, but it didn't make him go any easier on them.
"Any of, like, that feeling sorry for me or goodwill toward the coach returning from injury went out the door when I got on guys for their lack of defensive prowess," he said. "Yeah, all that love is gone."
UConn opens its season Nov. 8 against Sacred Heart.

I can't remember the name of our Friar Women's bb team coach...O'Brien maybe? I know he came from the Bonnies and is a good coach and good person. If I were his friend and consigliare I would advise him to resign and go find employment elsewhere to enjoy his vocation and longevity. I realize that PC pays pretty good and doesn't fire a coach without REAL just cause, but are you satisfied with taking it in the nuts at least twice per year with Geno's size 10 1/2 sneakers doing the honors? Talk about a guy with reasonable prospects of winning waking up one morning and reading his difficult job just got impossible.
Familiar spot for UConn
For the seventh and final time Geno Auriemma and his UConn women's basketball team were the unanimous choice to win the American Athletic Conference in the preseason poll. Next year things will change as the Huskies head back to the Big East. The Huskies have simply dominated conference play, winning all 120 regular season and postseason AAC games since the conference was formed in 2013. Only once has a conference team come within single digits of UConn when the Huskies only beat Tulane by 3 points in New Orleans a few seasons ago. UConn received 11 first-place votes from the other coaches in the league Monday. Auriemma picked Central Florida to win since he couldn't pick his own team.

That would be Coach Crowley. While I have zero hopes in beating the dogs from the state to RI's west, I love our trajectory. Just got picked for 5th in the BE preseason poll. Doormats no more.

UConn guard James Bouknight charged with fleeing cops after crash 1:54 PM ET Associated Press
STORRS, Conn. -- UConn freshman basketball player James Bouknight faces several charges after police say he ran from an officer following a crash on campus.
Police say Bouknight was driving a car that struck a street sign while speeding on Sept. 27. Police say Bouknight told responding officers he didn't have identification with him and later ran off.
Police say Bouknight has since provided them with a statement admitting his actions.

He has been charged with evading responsibility, interfering with a police officer, traveling too fast for conditions and operation of a motor vehicle without a license.
He's scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 29.
The guard issued a statement to apologize and called his actions irresponsible.
UConn coach Dan Hurley said there will be consequences both "within the structure of the team as well as on the outside."

Good parenting '82.
Even former altar boys sometimes drank the altar wine.
No one I knew waited for the police to show up after the "crime" was done.
23 skidoo . . .
We have our own legacy of Friars behaving badly. What about any incidents that may have gone unreported?
