Busy summer for Cooley as Pan Am Games are set to start
By Kevin McNamara Journal Sports Writer
PROVIDENCE — Ed Cooley may be the busiest college basketball coach in the country these days.
Instead of kicking back at his favorite beach (Narragansett) or fine-tuning his golf game, Cooley is juggling all sorts of hoop duties. With his players on campus, recruiting trips to check off and the start of training camp for the Pan Am Games team up this weekend, the Providence College coach owns a full plate.
“I’m full out. It’s been crazy,” Cooley said. “This Pan Am team has a lot of moving parts and is really a lot to take on, but it’s exciting, too.”
In a wide-ranging interview for the Providence Journal’s 401 Podcast, Cooley discussed the progress of his veteran-laden team, his dalliance with the Michigan head coaching position in May, the addition of three transfers, the Pan Am Games and more.
Next year’s Friar team will feature a veteran group with five seniors and Cooley says he likes the versatility and skill in his program. Even so, the balance of what could be the deepest group of Big East teams in the top 25 and top 50 will present a major challenge.
“I was sitting with Jay Wright (Villanova), Dave Leitao (DePaul) and Greg McDermott (Creighton) this past weekend recruiting,” Cooley said, “and we were just sitting there and I’m thinking 'He’s good, he’s good and he’s good.’ From the launch of the new Big East, this we feel will be the most competitive, top-to-bottom.”
As for his interview with Michigan, Cooley said he felt he needed to hear what the Wolverines had to say, but that, ultimately, he removed his name from the search because of his unique "fit" in Providence.
“It was just something that you thought about,” Cooley said.
“At the end of the day as (his wife) Nurys would always talk about, where do you fit and where do you belong? I just thought at this time in my life and my career that Providence College is still the best fit for me when you look at the 30,000 foot overview of the program.”
While Cooley volunteered to coach a Pan Am Games team that is made up entirely of Big East players (games start on July 31), he’s also facing a major challenge on the recruiting trail. PC’s five seniors — Alpha Diallo, Maliek White, Kalif Young, Emmitt Holt, Luwane Pipkins — will need to be replaced. Two transfers sitting out 2019-20 will bring experience but the Friars are again involved with a host of top-100 prospects and battling serious competition in the chase for some commitments.
“This is probably going to be the most important recruiting class we’ve had with five available scholarships in 2020,” Cooley said. “We identified some really good young players two years ago. Now everybody knows about them. Now it’s a matter of can we get them on the boat and will they swim with us.”

Has Ed moved from “as long as they will have me” to “at this point in my life”?
Nothing wrong with that and I actually appreciate the transparency.

One can only hope. From my perspective:
1. Nate will have to have developed a reliable jump shot from the foul line - extended to earn "Most Improved" 2. If AJ can hit 3s at that rate come BE play (not just OOC), then yes - he could be LETHAL for us. Hope that his defensive abilities have ticked up a few level as well.

Preseason hype is fun and so predictable. Coach ‘em up Cooley - our Friars have a lot of players with potential; unlocking that into an effective team remains to be seen.
The pieces are there in every position - now the hard work begins to mold the talent together.
No small task...

believe you misunderstood (or maybe you didn't)...at no point should anyone on the current roster stop trying to improve their ball handling no matter how much it's improved.
