Michigan search timeline *Beilein resigns, Manuel calls headhunters they call agents. *Firm gives Manuel names. He's disappointed at number and quality. AD asks agents if their clients are ok contractually (with buyouts) and when can they interview. *Manuel interviews Ed and no offer is made. Ed asks, if Howard is the leader and is told 'yes' but things are not settled and hang in. If Manuel offers, Ed was prepared to accept. *Ed talks to Driscoll. Says he's not #1--at UM-- and he needs more money or Power5 schools calling will be routine and he'll listen on advice from his agent, accountant, attorney on what to do even though he wants to stay. *Driscoll gets him a new deal. More $$$, status quo remains...until the next attractive opening. UM has no leverage, pays Howard what he asks and didn't hire the college experience they wanted. Ed does not turn down an opportunity to coach UM. He never received an offer. Is this in the article you linked? I can't seem to find it there.

Interesting to read what Michigan evidently fed to the Detroit Free Press.
Going solely on the tweets and unsubstantiated snippets we were being fed - I felt that Ed was at least one of two names still available for consideration - with Howard being the emotional favorite of Michigan fans. Unless it was part of a well orchestrated leverage play, the tweet from the student who announced games on the radio (...that Ed would accept, with "$6M" in play) had me wondering if Ed had an offer in hand - or was indicating that he'd accept if offered after Michigan met with Howard.
So...if nothing else, PC upped the ante as an insurance policy to keep Ed's attention focused on the PanAm games, and coming PC season. I hope that the bump in pay is actually incentive based, and that Bob Driscoll was able to include a considerable Buy-Out Clause this time around (believing based upon what I've read lately, that no such Clause has existed up until now).

I don't see the incentive thing as a big deal but add it if it makes you happy....and if there was no previous buyout someone was misquoted.

Not sure UM had no leverage w Howard since he signed for $2 Mil. As someone already posted his estimated worth is $80 Mil so the $2 Mil is lunch money. Per the school, Howard signed a five-year deal that starts at $2 million annually and has a base salary of $400,000.

Whitefriar - Best you get practicing on the changing of diapers and attending to your first child all night, so that your lovely bride can resume her beauty sleep! Pretty prophetic on my part. I wake up this morning to a text from my oldest, who informed me that Whitefriar's wife delivered early this morning. Congratulations, Whitefriar! Someday, you'll be able to tell your son that he was the topic of a discussion on the Friartownhoops Board - before being 6-hours old. Pretty impressive! The next round at Hybernia is on me. Congrats White. 82, are you talking about Hibernia in Hell’s Kitchen?

No way Cooley or any coach coaching at PC’s level turns down a school like Michigan.

Money meaningless to Mich with b10 TV deal. Agree. But the writer said UM had no leverage w Howard once Cooley declined. They got Howard pretty cheap at $2 Mil since Belein was making 3.8. I think Howard really wanted this job and could care less what they payed him. As I said, $2 Mil is lunch money for him.
