This is a new theory...you believe Hs kids will consider PC because he talked to Michigan? Not to mention he at least considered walking from the Panam team ( as if anyone cares)....hs kids care about neither.

Posted at 7:31 PM Updated at 7:34 PM PROVIDENCE — When the call came last Friday, Bob Driscoll felt a twinge in his stomach.
Providence College’s athletic director had heard from other suitors inquiring about the services of his basketball coach over the last eight years but this one seemed a bit different. This was the University of Michigan, the maize and blue, Hail to the Victors.
“I told Ed Michigan is probably one of the top 10 brands, you have to listen,” Driscoll said. “I didn’t want him to, but he had to.”
Cooley met with Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel Monday in Florida and when he returned to his hotel at the Big East annual meetings in Ponte Vedra Beach, Driscoll was waiting for him. An all-night discussion about the state of the Friar hoop program followed, with Cooley’s attorney, Dennis Coleman of Ropes & Gray, joining in. In the wee hours of the morning a PC basketball crisis was eventually averted.
Cooley, the popular coach with the deepest of Providence roots, isn’t going anywhere. By midday Tuesday, PC was announcing a multi-year contract extension with its coach that sparked bursts of joy across social media from Friar fans.
“While it’s very flattering to be considered for other head coaching jobs, after talking with my family I have decided to remain in my hometown of Providence,” Cooley said in a release. “The Friars are my family. Most importantly, my commitment is to my players and my team at Providence.”
No details of the extension were made public but sources said the deal is for 10 years. Cooley earned $2.6 million in 2017 according the college’s tax filing and will continue to receive annual escalators that raise his pay well over $3 million over the life of the contract. Other upgrades for staffing and recruiting travel were also agreed upon, according to Driscoll.
“At the end of the day it was about relationships,” said Driscoll. “It if was only money, Michigan could out-spend us. Ed and I talked about taking the program to a different level and what we need to do to continue to build towards winning a national championship. We want to do what Ed sees as important to reaching that goal.”
Any college basketball observer would quickly acknowledge that reaching Final Fours and winning national championships would come significantly easier at Michigan than Providence. The Wolverines advanced to the national championship game in both 2013 and ’18 under John Beilein and are in position to recruit the best players in the country and play in one of the best conferences in the Big Ten.
That’s a neighborhood Cooley yearns to lead Providence into. But that only comes with winning, and winning big. While he’s led the Friars to seven-straight postseason appearances, including a school record five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, the team has fizzled on the sport’s biggest stage with a 1-5 record. He’s hoping this dalliance with Michigan will show recruits how committed he is to Providence.
“I know who I am and where I fit and there’s still a lot to be done at Providence,” Cooley said. “Our mission isn’t complete at Providence.”
Asked if he was offered the Michigan job, Cooley demurred but did say “this was a big decision but I’m so happy where it ended up. Money is part of the business, sure, but this is about who I am, where I’m happy and the ability we have to impact the community at Providence.”
Trying to reach that loftier level of success wasn’t something Driscoll or PC wanted to risk without Cooley. When PC christened the crown jewel of the program last fall, the $30-million Ruane Development Center, pictures and videos featuring the coach with current and former players were plastered everywhere. No one wanted to take them down off the walls. He’s also a prodigious fundraiser who values relationships with boosters of the program and school.
“I was anxious,” Driscoll said, “because of how much we’ve invested in Ed. We’ve opened the Ruane Center and Ed was vital to that. He means a lot to the college. He’s not a replaceable person for us as far as relationships and branding our program.”
In March of 2016, Providence agreed to a long-term deal with Cooley and termed him “a Friar for life.” That was before a program like Michigan called, however. Now, a few months short of his 50th birthday, Cooley has made a decision that is insisting that is the case.

The reality is Ed was only considered due to timing and several "first" choices not wanting to jump or even have the discussion at this point in the year. It sucks that he stung us for a raise after last year's performance and not a second weekend of the tourney. Anyone could've thrown their name in the ring to get a raise. What could jay wright have gotten out of nova ? Add to it his love for USA basketball, and it would've been nice for him to say no thanks off the bat. He'd reportedly had a lifetime deal with a very large buyout and was the second highest paid coach in the BE before today. Our guy is no different than the others. As for being the most loyal coach on the planet, we will find out when we advance past weekend one and several jobs are open. You think he just threw his name in the ring? Michigan of course just played along and interviewed him? There are quite a few bad takes in this thread, but your’s is the winner.

Whitefriar - Best you get practicing on the changing of diapers and attending to your first child all night, so that your lovely bride can resume her beauty sleep! Pretty prophetic on my part. I wake up this morning to a text from my oldest, who informed me that Whitefriar's wife delivered early this morning. Congratulations, Whitefriar! Someday, you'll be able to tell your son that he was the topic of a discussion on the Friartownhoops Board - before being 6-hours old. Pretty impressive! The next round at Hybernia is on me.

KMac’s piece offers timely perspectives to that reality of the business side of the whole Cooley to Michigan gambol.
We are playing in the arena with the big boys - Driscoll gets that and his entire work product across our many athletic investments reflects that understanding...
Was Cooley actually offered? Maybe - but does that matter? Sure it does because there was a high probability he would have been given relationships with Manuel and Flipper.
So Driscoll who thinks “big” stepped in here, not from weakness but from confident strength.
Too much already invested; more to come as he builds the brand and broadens the booster base - ( think Holtmann to Ohio State, Mack to Louisville) so let’s back off the being held up crap to recognizing that PC is serious and focused on the goal of being a player and contender.
That is a significant statement of purpose and a long way from the age old parochial toe dipping of the past. It’s a business after all and small we may be but look at the larger picture - Ruane/Schneider, Campus Upgrades, etc., etc. front and center.
PC is thriving - costly(?), yes but emergent.
Instead of recoiling, thinking we dodged a bullet, think how we fired right back and stood tall here, confident we can and have broadened our support base in pursuit of that goal of National Championships.
Andale...

J - you do know how this works dont you? Mich reaches out to search firms and agents of several candidates to see who would be interested in having a discussion. Cooley said yes. I was told the same happened with osu a few years ago but the conversation never took place. Was he truly interested? I tend to doubt it but who knows.
Do you honestly believe that Michigan's top 2 candidates with college coaching experience are Jordan and Cooley?

I don't think Ed was offered the job. There was too much media coverage around Howard for the AD to offer the job to Ed before he had his face to face w Howard in Miami yesterday.

I don’t care if Cooley was offered or was the top pick.
What matters here is Driscoll stepping up and responding from strength whilst building the brand.
We need to open our eyes and celebrate that PC is moving forward here...

“This is the place where Ed is meant to be. It’s bigger than wins and losses. It’s about changing lives and helping young people see what’s possible in the world,” Driscoll added. “I think we can compete with anyone in the country. If Villanova can win two national championships, there’s no reason why we can’t compete for national titles. That’s the model we’re looking at.”
As part of the press release that was distributed Tuesday, it listed the Friars’ shortcomings prior to Cooley’s arrival in 2011 – six sub-.500 seasons over a 10-year period – and what’s unfolded under his watch – seven straight postseason appearances, including a school-record five-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
“It’s a different place than it was 15 years ago,” said Driscoll.
There it is...

I am hoping that we all can recover from the many years of battered fan syndrome. I believe the end result of the Michigan search is good. How we got there does not really matter. We have come a long way baby. Now I hope we can take the next step and become a major player in the Big East and NCAA each and every year. A lot of us do not have a lot of time to Wait Go Friars1 PS Bob Driscoll has really grown into a Big time AD.

National Championship? Friars couldn't get out if the NIT first round this past season.
Recall the level of play by teams in this year's NCAA Tournament.
Friar's were JV material as were Big East teams in comparison.

Michigan search timeline *Beilein resigns, Manuel calls headhunters they call agents. *Firm gives Manuel names. He's disappointed at number and quality. AD asks agents if their clients are ok contractually (with buyouts) and when can they interview. *Manuel interviews Ed and no offer is made. Ed asks, if Howard is the leader and is told 'yes' but things are not settled and hang in. If Manuel offers, Ed was prepared to accept. *Ed talks to Driscoll. Says he's not #1--at UM-- and he needs more money or Power5 schools calling will be routine and he'll listen on advice from his agent, accountant, attorney on what to do even though he wants to stay. *Driscoll gets him a new deal. More $$$, status quo remains...until the next attractive opening. UM has no leverage, pays Howard what he asks and didn't hire the college experience they wanted. Ed does not turn down an opportunity to coach UM. He never received an offer. www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2019/05/22/juwan-howard-michigan-basketball-coach/3769448002/
