Powell was money with 30 points. Fun player to watch and root for now but not when the friars play him. Alpha still struggles from the line but still played well. No Nate or AJ.

I watched last night.
Venezuela did a nice job extending the USA defense, and continuously looking to make the extra pass to an open shooter (mostly for outside shots). Watching the play (and wondering when Nate would get in) it occurred to me that Ed needed to go with players who were quick to cover opposing players as the ball moved around. There was very little (if any) post play by Venezuela, which is where Nate would be an effective defender.
Just my guess on why he didn't play.

Duke has been impressive. He has more NBA potential than anyone on the USA team no doubt in my mind. Gunna hear the hype this year for sure, and he may have a decision too make at the end of the year. Big year coming.

Did I misread it or did Duke only play 13 minutes?

Did I misread it or did Duke only play 13 minutes? "only" They are playing three games in three days. I'd assume resting guys has always been the plan.

Are you expecting his numbers to jump seriously this season? And what about his 3-pt shooting? Up till now my fear has been Nate having the big year (good) and then him doing a Bentil at year end (bad).

Until Nate shows some signs of being able to play defense, him jumping to the NBA is of no concern.

Until Nate shows some signs of being able to play defense, him jumping to the NBA is of no concern. Except that 20-yr olds are capable of making crazy decisions.

Duke did only play 13 minutes, but a big reason for that was because he picked up his 4th foul with about 2 minutes to go in the third quarter. Gillespie had a very poor game and was significantly outplayed by Duke, but Cooley isn’t using anyone else at the PG spot, so he ended up playing 27 minutes. Duke didn’t commit a turnover, scored 6 points, and played with a lot of confidence. He just needs to tone it down a bit on defense, as all of his fouls came as a result of him being overly physical, a la Kris Dunn.
Groselle had a strong game and Cooley played him 30 minutes as a result. He is a good defender and is the only team USA guy who has adjusted to the FIBA goaltend rule where you can take a ball off the rim.
In the second half, Powell scored 20 of our 36, Alpha had 8, Groselle 5, Duke 2 and Wideman 1. Powell was the entire offense and we basically just watched him operate, which frankly was fun to watch. He’s a terrific player.
I would hope that AJ and Watson get some bigger minutes tonight. Puerto Rico and team USA each have already claimed a spot in the semifinals tomorrow, so the game is essentially meaningless and a good chance to rest guys like Powell and Alpha and let other guys get some experience.
I have really enjoyed watching the guys support each other, it seems like a great bunch. They were all going crazy when Powell went off, the bench was reacting like a bunch of walk ons and seemed to be having a lot of fun.

I assume today matters for seeding ? Is there a preferable semi final opponent?

And Nate has no spot in the nba... doesnt mean he wouldn't bolt but he has zero chance to play in that league

Team USA loses 87-84 and will play Argentina tomorrow while Puerto Rico gets the Dominican Republic. I think we would’ve preferred the DR, but when they played Argentina, it was a 67-66 game, so hard to say that Argentina is significantly better.
Duke had a great first half with 8 points on 2-2 from 3 and 2-2 from the line, but he picked up 3 fouls. One was him battling with a bigger guy in the post, that’s one you can live with. But the other two were from him being over aggressive going for steals and those are the ones he has to avoid. He didn’t do much in the second half and picked up a questionable 4th foul that limited him to only like 4 minutes in the half. It’s too bad because Gillespie struggled again.
Alpha had a great all around game and scored a bunch in addition to his stellar defense. Powell was quiet tonight and played limited minutes, while Alpha played a lot more than I would have thought. Alpha and Samuels both had about 16 to lead the team and Alpha was probably our best player.
Nate played about six minutes in the first half and was largely invisible. He didn’t take a shot and only once or twice did anyone even look to feed the post. AJ did not play at all.
I’m a bit surprised and disappointed Ed didn’t give Nate more time and AJ any time at all. He played 11 guys about as equally as he could’ve in the first but outside of Powell, he largely went with his starters in the second.
Team USA was hot from 3 early and led comfortably throughout the first 3 quarters, but they fell apart in the 4th quarter. The offense completely collapsed without Powell, and we could really use more Duke at the point, but he has to stop committing silly fouls.

Dukes 4 minutes included a horrible in bounds pass, forced 3 that missed by a mile, and that questionable foul. Wonder why Powell didn't get normal run. I fell asleep as we were hissing away the lead so didn't catch the 4th.
