We are talking about a guy that the coach is basically afraid to play most second half’s. He certainly becomes a liability the lat 10 minutes of the 2nd half especially with his foul shooting. The Watson/Young combo play 30 minutes per game in BE play. But that becomes very few minutes towards the end. Certainly the small unit w Jackson in and Bullock at the 5 has played well and most nights Bullock has survived. Watson is less of an offensive liability but he doesn't rebound at all yet. But Delgado and Govan are coming soon and it will be interesting if EC plays the bigs any additional minutes those games

Young is playable in the early stages of the 2nd half.
Watson is not playable at all in the 2nd half. He doesn't defend or rebound.
If we aren't in serious foul trouble, Bullock, Jackson and Lindsey/Diallo upfront, should play the final 10 minutes.

Those that crucified him in the past , with cause, should have the common decency to commend his improvement which should be obvious to even the least cerebral fans. He was pretty good last night in half one ...I mean 19 minutes and 7 rebs ain’t chit plus good D and lots of close outs. Come on specimens, unless your blind, call them as you see them. For crice sakes smarten up Ouch. All right already. I admit to scheming as to whom we could bring in to replace him. And yes I applaud his recent ascent.

Young's speed and agility seemed to frustrate many opponents...if we can just get a bit more out of Watson, we'll be able to hold our own down low.

FWIW--I was talking to a retired ( aren't they all in Florida) high school coach recently and he was talking about the changes in the game. He said one major change, especially w the AAU influence, is the rebounding of centers. He said kids are throwing up shots from everywhere but mainly the 3 pt line. That includes power forwards and some centers. As a result there is much less rebounding and put-backs around the rim. Kids get more perimeter rebounds than under the basket. There are less fast break layups and lane shots because kids are pulling up and taking 3's on the break He said there is some similarity in college but not as bad. He said defense was always an issue when true centers arrived at colleges. But he says college coaches now complain that few true centers have basic rebound skills when they arrive on campus. Coaches are forced to teach them how to box out and after they get decent at that, then move to actual rebounding techniques. He felt many centers should be red-shirted because they are by far the least prepared to go against college competition than any other position.

I think its a stretch he is the best defender, Lindsey and Diallo. ....gotta love friartown... I said "help" defender There is a difference, Diallo is best defender with Lindsey a close 2nd but Young has been great rotating/helping in the paint which is critical It's why you don't see many easy baskets around rim despite running teams off 3pt line(which usually can lead to easy buckets) He stays on the ball

We are talking about a guy that the coach is basically afraid to play most second half’s. I don't think it's that at ALL FWIW I just think Cooley loves to put his best offensive unit in the game in the 2nd half (remember Fortune over Carson?? yeah smh...same thing here but only it's justified this time around)

Dex, Again, he's better. He's rebounding better and he's playing better defense. But there is a reason why Cooley doesn't have him in at crunch time and it isn't all because he shoots 30% from the line in Big East play. He was a project coming in and he still a project today. Hopefully he can put it together for a solid junior and senior year. A project? The kid was a regular contributor and played pretty well on a tourney team. I'm not sure I would call him a project.(with the exception of his weight/FT shooting)

I wouldn't call him a regular contributor last year. He played. This year he has been a regular contributor for better (lately) and for worse ( Large part of 1st 20 games).
He's a project. He's improved but, his offensive is still poor at best, his free-throw shooting is still brutal and while his defense and rebounding are getting better, he's still not where we need him to be. All this adds up to him still being a project. Hopefully, next year it all starts to come together.
Before we all start getting excited about Young's recent improved play, lets look at the whole body of work..
Young 18 mpg, 5.1 ppg, 4.6 boards and 47% from the line
Watson 13.5mpg 6.7ppg 2.0 boards and 71% from the line
So Young plays over Watson because he defends better that's it and you still can't have him out there in crunch time because he will hurt you. He is constantly in foul trouble, because he isn't a great defender. He only rebounds slightly better, he doesn't score as well and he doesn't shoot free-throws nearly as well.
This is Cooley's 7th year would you have started him at center in any other season, prior to this one?

Yank he played in all 33 games and averaged 13mpg on 51% from the floor averaging 3.2 & 3.2 so i would say he "contributed" with regularity

He's getting better, not there yet. Thought he would have made significant progress in the off-season. I hope he makes a big jump next season. His passing is better this season. He had a great kick out for a 3 the other night.

He had a great kick out for a 3 the other night. In fairness to Young, he was playing hurt earlier in the year. Since the first Depaul came, he has been back playing his regular 18-20 minutes and he is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game. That is a solid number for the limited minutes he plays. I think his defense keeps him out in the last 10 minutes and he is a real liability once you get to the 1-1. He does play hard so maybe he also has fatigue issues. The announcers said the other night that Cooley said he has been spending extra time on his FT shooting
