Well actually everyone knows he was canned ...a real chooch who was, to put it mildly, not liked

Boston College athletic director Brad Bates announced today that he will step down from his position at the end of the academic year.
Bates’ contract with the school expires in October and was not going to be renewed, according to sources.
Bates, who succeeded Gene DeFilippo as the Eagles’ AD in October 2012, resigned to assume a position of vice president with Collegiate Sports Associates, an executive search and consulting group in Chapel Hill, N.C.
BC will hire an executive search firm to have replacement on the job for the start of the 2017 football season. The ideal candidate would likely be an up-and-coming associate AD from a school in one of the Power-5 conferences.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Boston College and am especially grateful for the opportunity to serve the university,” said Bates in a prepared statement.
“I will forever be an Eagle and a fan of our student athletes, coaches and staffs and will cherish the great relationships that I have made here.” Bates’ tenure appeared on shaky ground following the 2015-16 academic year when both the football and men’s basketball teams went winless in Atlantic Coast Conference play

Learned this morning that Gene DiFlippo replacement of some 4 years ago plans to resign under direction before 10-1-17, after the collapse of BC winning programs and lack of recruiting for their ACC teams. Mr Bates is moving on to a company his good friend is at... Looks like they may receive a lot better resumes in next few months How about our URI AD

Gene had a better reputation national wide in sports management than this last selection Flip might have had a better reputation in sports mgmt., but he was roundly considered a jerk from those working for BC. And fans hated him more! Bates got on a sinking ship that Flip created. PIZZA, SODA, GRINDERS!!!

I have to disagree with your post above... as know of 12-15 staff members that were part of Mr DeFlippo staff for 10 years or more and they all worked as a team and good group and all budgets were in better shape than they are in recent three years
Bates sunk the ship his first year

I too had a BC son and some friends among the most prominent BC fundraisers. They opened their pockets and got zilch from a leaking program. Flip had become a pompous dictator. Bates initiated "town meetings' because of all the dissension amongst fans. Higher up alum were done with Flip's "mightier than thou" attitude on campus. Bates provided a change but his fate was sealed before he even took the job. Budget problems were a result of empty stands. Steve Donahue was perhaps the worst hire in college basketball. And this from BC Interuption ... www.bcinterruption.com/2016/3/14/11213970/how-gene-defilippo-squandered-bcs-moment-to-shineI love you Joe but BC has been a sinking ship for a long time. Flip presided over BC's move from the Big East to the ACC, following the scent of money and his "girlfriend" Donna Shalala. Things have gone downhill from there. PIZZA, SODA, GRINDERS!!!

Gravellese...I wonder if he is related to that rotten referee in Hockey East? The next time he calls a penalty on BC will be the first.
The writer gives Fr Leahy a complete pass on any of the problems when ultimately he approved the budgets. Didn't BC have the reputation of being unwilling to pay market value for coaches? In reality, didn't Leahy hire Bates? Of course he did and anybody who says NO is an idiot.
Flipper should be Knighted for the foresight to get BC into the acc and I guess one has to "credit" Leahy with sanctioning the move.
How long has Leahy been there? Do they serve for life as President?
Leahy abandoned his Catholic brothers and screwed his partners in the Big East. He abandoned his moral and ethical values and that of his Church to become a money-changer in the corrupt world of sports. As a result, in a morally just country, he would have cheapened a BC degree but nobody gives a chit about that stuff anymore.
He should have been prosecuted and sent to the Island of Elba to live out his final miserable days amid world condemnation for the games he was playing with the Redsox and John Harrington.
The good news is that the vast majority of BC kids turn out great because of their family values and despite being shepherded by a man of personal bankrupt character.
I have spoken.

"Johnny" Leahy wouldn't be the first Priest to fleece the estate of some old lady nor the last. However that factoid does not make it right.
