NEW YORK — Chris Mullin hasn’t even had his introductory presser yet and he’s already making moves.
The new St. John’s coach scored a major coup on the coaching and recruiting front by nabbing St. John’s product and former Iowa State assistant Matt Abdelmassih to his staff.
“Extremely sad but happy to move onto the next stage in my life,” he Tweeted.
Abdelmassih was the Cyclones’ lead recruiter on Cheick Diallo, the 6-foot-9 Mcdonald’s All-American forward out of Our Savior New American. Diallo is considering Iowa State, St. John’s, Kentucky, Kansas and Pitt. He is also close with St. John’s guard Felix Balamou.
The Des Moines Register also credited Abdelmassih for recruiting Royce White, Jameel McKay, Abdel Nader, Dustin Hogue and DeAndre Kane to Iowa State.

Understand there are a lot of raised eyebrows over the Chris 'no experience' Mullin hire but I actually expect this to successful. Mullin is a NYC legend and he certainly will be no stranger to the High School gyms - getting the players will take time but it will not be a problem IMO. Keep in mind, NYC is oddly 'parochial' when it comes to basketball and the resident fraternity; Mullins has that Brooklyn pedigree that opens doors immediately.
Coaching them up and dealing with all the other stuff required as a head coach on the D1 level remains open to question. If SJU as an institution is flailing then this hire may be just the jolt it needs to attract attention and fill those seats - not just in the Garden but in the classroom...

If he plugs in and commits to all the work he'll do very well. Not sure a man of NBA royalty and considerable wealth cares to spend his days and nights in high school gyms winning over youth coaches and teenage players. If he's willing to do that, he could nail it. BTW, I always tell my kids that Mullen was the best college player I saw in person during the BE era. He was awesome.

Honestly Rock. Seeing Mullin live playing for St John's I would have to disagree. He seemed slow and pudgy to me back them. But those passing and shooting skills!
I do not know who I'd put before him though. Possibly Ewing in college.

INDIANAPOLIS — Junior big man Chris Obekpa will return to St. John’s next season and play for first-year coach Chris Mullin, a source close to the situation confirmed to SNY.tv Monday night.
It remains unclear what sophomore guard Rysheed Jordan will do, but more could become clear this week. Obekpa was among the players who met with Mullin before his introductory press conference last week, while Jordan was not.
“I saw Chris [Obekpa] today,” Mullin said then. “Talent usually makes a good coach. I did not see Rysheed.”
The 6-foot-9 Obekpa was suspended on Selection Sunday by former coach Steve Lavin for failing a drug test and missed the team’s second-round NCAA Tournament loss to San Diego State.
Obekpa averaged 5.8 points and 7.0 rebounds this season. He is not projected to be drafted.
His return automatically gives Mullin’s team a shot-blocking presence in the middle, assuming he can stay out of trouble off the court.

Chris Mullin lands another recruit at St. John’s, Darien Williams skips out on Iowa State to join Red Storm Chris Mullin's first St. John’s team has its first new player. Darien Williams, a 6-8 junior college shooting guard, has committed to the Red Storm and will likely sign in the coming week. The Williams commitment comes just a day after Tennessee freshman Tariq Owens said he would transfer to St. John’s. Williams can play this coming season while Owens is required by NCAA transfer rules to sit out a season. Wonder if Cal going to the nba has some legs. I doubt it. He is on top of the world in Kentucky and his one shot at the NBA was a disaster.
