PROVIDENCE — Recruiting never stops in college basketball and even as the Friars welcomed three players in their Class of 2015 on Thursday, Ed Cooley was looking ahead to adding even more talent.
PC announced that it received signed letters-of-intent from forward Alex Owens (Orlando, Fla.) and guards Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) and Ryan Fazekas (Chesterton, Ind.). All three players verbally committed to PC months ago and scouts say the Friars’ current three-player class is in the top five in the Big East, trailing Marquette, Villanova and Georgetown.
“I like our class,” Cooley said. “We needed to add some shooting and we did that with Ryan and Drew and Alex is one of the tougher, most-skilled big kids in the country.”
Cooley said his assistants will continue to scour the country for additions to the class and added that “we are probably looking for a couple of guards” in the spring.
Owens, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward, attends Oak Ridge High School in Orlando. He is ranked as the No. 90 recruit in the nation, according to ESPN.com. He also is ranked No. 88 by 247 sports.com and No. 109 by Rivals.com. Owens averaged 17 points, 15.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 2013-14 and shot 64 percent from the field as a junior. Owens recorded 27 double-doubles in 29 games and earned second team All-State honors before playing on the AAU circuit with Each 1 Teach 1 last summer.
“Alex gives us versatility up front,” Cooley said. “He has super hands, can really pass and [is] just a man physically. Friartown is going to like him.”
Edwards is a 6-3 combo guard who attends Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore. As a junior, he averaged 15 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists on a team that finished 28-6 and played in the Baltimore Catholic League championship game. Edwards earned First Team All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and played for the Maryland 3D AAU Team.
“Drew is an emerging player who needs to put on some size and strength, but he’s a shot-maker, shot-taker,” Cooley said. “He’ll help improve our 3-point shooting, and Drew and Ryan add to that for sure.”
Fazekas, a 6-8 shooting forward, committed to PC more than a year ago. He attends Marquette Catholic High School in Michigan City, Ind., and led his team to the Indiana Division 1A state title last season. Fazekas scored 34 points and registered seven 3-pointers in the championship game to establish an Indiana High School championship record. As a junior, he led the team in scoring (15 ppg) and rebounding (8 rpg) and shot 56 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free-throw line. He earned Indiana Junior All-Star honors and First Team All-Conference accolades and is a top five candidate for Mr. Indiana Basketball honors as a senior. Fazekas played for the Mean Streets AAU team.
“Ryan is able to stretch the floor and gives us some toughness and length on the perimeter,” Cooley said. “I just love his overall toughness and ability to make shots.
