PROVIDENCE BASKETBALL VERSUS NAVY PREVIEW

The Friars are now 2-0 with wins against Albany and Binghamton and although Ed Cooley might want a lot more at times, overall he's happy.
"I have to do a better job of being patient since we have so many young guys," said Cooley after the win. "However, overall I do feel that we improved from the first game to the second."
3 THINGS FRIAR FANS NEED TO WATCH
3 point Shooting: The Friars shot 0-9 from 3 point land vs Binghamton - talk about a stat we never saw the last few years during the Bryce Cotton era. In fact, other than Tyler Harris' three 3-pointers on opening night, LaDontae Henton is the only other Friar to make one from behind the arc. Overall, Providence is 4 for 22 from downtown in two games. That being said; PC is running a bit more, Kris Dunn and Jalen Lindsey are still adjusting and let's not forget Josh Fortune's shooting is gone as well. What this means is that perimeter shooting will be by committee quite often this year.
DEFENSIVE SCHEMES
Besides the obvious length of the Friars when they go zone, Ed Cooley showed some other defensive schemes that I really liked vs Binghamton. There were several possessions when the Friar defense looked like a zone, but in fact it was a switching man to man defense to adjust to the Bearcat offense. When PC goes with their big lineup, a lot of interchangeable parts are out there and guys can guard the same positions. It will interesting to see if these defensive looks carry over to the new year and conference play.
PATIENCE WITH DUNN
It seems like he's been in Friartown for a long time; and in basketball years he has. But due to back to back season ending injuries, the fact is that Kris Dunn is brand new to a lot of this world. Friars fans need to be patient with Dunn and I still feel this guy can have a great career. Remember, Dunn was a McDonald's All-American who picked Providence over Louisville and UConn. And I can still remember the MSG-Varsity game I broadcasted nearly four years ago when Dunn was in 11th grade. It was one of the best performances by a guard that I had seen in a long, long time at that level and at that age.
WHO'S NEXT?
The Navy Midshipmen arrive to the Dunk tomorrow 0-2 overall. Navy was blown out by Notre Dame 92-53 in their last outing, but had a much better performance in their first game of the year. The Midshipmen gave #19 Michigan State all they can handle and lost 64-59. Edward Alade led the way with 12 points and they forced the Spartans into 15 turnovers with their hustle. It was also impressive that Navy only turned it over 10 times, and were only out-rebounded 38-30 by Tom Izzo's team. That being said, I felt Michigan State did not play well after watching the film, but Navy still showed how gritty they are.
"The bottom line is, they played like they are: military people," Tom Izzo said. "They did not quit."
Navy was picked to finish in last place this year in the Patriot League. Last year the Midshipmen were 9-21 overall and 4-14 in league play, but head coach Ed DeChellis returns his top seven scorers from last season. Senior Brandon Venturini brings the most experience for a team last year that lost nine games after leading at halftime. Navy is 20-70 overall in the Ed DeChellis era.
I recently caught up with Ed Cooley's coaching staff. Here are the main keys to Thursday night:
OFFENSE:
PC wants to move the ball and get their defense shifting from side to side. At times their ball movement has been stagnant, and they want to keep improving that. They also want to play inside/out and get more shot attempts from the paint early; rather than settling for too many jump shots in the 1st half.
DEFENSE:
PC wants to control two guards in particular. They want to slow Tilman Dunbar down in transition and find Brandon Venturini spotting up for threes. And PC feels they've given up too many three pointers after the first two games. Overall, the staff wants to defend the three point line better and force more 'tough 2 pointers' in the game.
