Free-throws Henton and Harris included =brutal
Guard play was not good.
Cartwright...too many forced shots.
Carson needs to stay out of foul trouble. Big drop off in middle when he was out, especially on the defensive end.
Dunn's play was disappointing. No sugar coating.
Harris and Henton will need to carry this team. If one has an off night offensively, so will the Friars. Not seeing enough offense on this team.

1. Typical mid-November first game under Cooley. Sluggish in many spots, big scoring droughts and enough worries to keep the natives restless. Excellent crowd, biggest opener I can recall in many years.
2. I know everyone loves Cartwright but to me, at least tonight, his time at the point came at the expense of a comfortable Kris Dunn occupying those minutes. I'd have preferred seeing Dunn at the point with Junior at the two. Dunn just seemed lost off the ball. This is a big issue to keep an eye on IMO. Can't have a kid with that skill-set invisible all night (no FG's!, 2 points)
3. Harris is obviously an important guy for us but his shoot first, turnover second, pass third prioritization is maddening to me. He is still not a defensive player.
4. Henton is Henton. Shows the value of a true four year player.
5. Perimeter shooting seems like a potential HUGE issue. Fortune's departure will sting you even more once you see this squad play.
6. Many will come away from tonight saying things like "we're screwed" or "well, this will a rebuilding year" but we've seen this movie before with EC teams: they will nearly lose (or lose outright) to teams before New Years that will have you wondering where a BE win will come from and then you'll look up in February and see the boys have 7-8 of them.
7. I like the kid a lot defensively but how in the world does CD not have a single offensive skill at this point? No drop step, up & under, jump hook or left hand. Makes no sense to me.
8. Cotton covered a lot of ills with this team, not the least of which was evidenced tonight at the FT line. Nearly cost us the game.
9. Albany was decent but did not look to me at all like an NCAA team, not even close actually.

Just a hunch but I think Cooley is playing Cartwright at the point right now to give him some experience for later in the season. Right now Dunn has a lot of rust. I am looking forward to seeing how he is playing after 10 games. Frosh will get better as we move forward. We won. I am happy. Next.

1. Great crowd for opening night... Had to be over 10,000. 2. I'm thinking Cartwright is playing so much because he gives us something in the half court and Dunn is giving almost nothing right now. I think it will come with Dunn so Ed will have to find the right balance here and get some early wins without holding back Dunn's development. 3. Harris may be our best offensive player so we have to live with the other stuff. Hopefully he continues to mature and his game gets more efficient. 4. Henton is Harris' model for efficiency. 5. Didn't see the first game but I was worried about our ability to score especially if Dunn doesn't step up in a big way. Tonight didn't allay those fears. 6. Agree that Cooley and staff will figure out the best way to play with this group. Expect them to be much better in February than they are now. 7. CD is a presence defensively just with sheer size but it's amazing how small he plays offensively. 8. Free throw shooting will get better if only because Henton and Harris will take a lot of them and both will be much better than they were tonight. 9. Albany was very well coached- gave us nothing in transition and we will need quite a bit of that this year.

1. Good crowd. Definitely over 10 I'd say more like 11 and change. Would still love to see a sat night opener with a banner raising banged out but what can you do. Student section was decent. Strong numbers. Seemed more into their glow sticks but at least they were there. I'd wager 15% of them will show Monday. Jury still out. PS does a male PC student exist?
2. Agree Dunn looked lost tonight. The 2 pg thing might not last, we'll see. He just was a non factor until he hit those two clutch free throws after 2 bad missed freebies.
3. Bentil is going to be a real player.
4. CD didn't play great, but at least he threw a few gimmes down with authority. Last year he was inexplicably trying to lay those in. He needs to continue to be a presence in D, blocking and altering shots and grabbing boards and if he can get us a few easy buckets inside I'll take it.
5. Chukwu had a nasty block that showed a glimpse of what will, eventually be in store.
6. Lack of permiter shooter and go to guy on offense is a concern .
7. Free throw shooting was our bread and butter last year, it was practically automatic and a major factor that kept us in virtually every game. Tonight it was horrid. I hope and pray this was opening night jitters and not the start of a trend.
8. Last year we had no depth which sucked. However the unit that played was very cohesive and each knew their role. This year we have waves of guys who Cooley used which was refreshing however that could hurt our offensive flow and guys (and coaches)will need to figure out their roles and gel.
9. I am reminded of what a young and inexperienced team this is. I'd say there's a legit chance we take half a step back this year. I hope I'm wrong. Pretty rough and fast paced schedule coming up so well know more soon.

...just don't see how well get enough offense with Cartwright...Dunn...and Carson on the floor together....not sure who's the best replacement....I assumed it'd be Lindsey....did lomomba or chuckwu play at all in the second half?....and I agree I'd rather see Dunn get the pg minutes for now without the overplays on D....thought Cartwrights d was awful...was told that perimeter shooting would be ok due to added length on D....that length goes away with Cartwright.....
As for #6... The fact that we were outside of the tourney last march should tell us we can't afford any hiccups before conf play....3 Ls max....
...cotton hid a ton of warts....as did batts on the nights he hit that FT jumper...
...and Dmac....we are not young....not even close...

Rock,
Dunn hasn't played in a year. Hasn't played, which is a lot different from red-shirting and practicing. I agree with an earlier poster who said he'd be okay after 10 games under his belt.
And by then I expect Lindsey to be starting. He too has rust, having missed most of the late summer with mono and now is recovering from an ugly dislocation on his shooting hand. Hassett, after the game, was extoling his sweet outside stroke. He will break out soon. And we will need an outside shooter to keep defenses honest.
Goal is to be at least 4-1 after next Sunday night.

Cotton was an 80% FT shooter in '12 and an 85% shooter in '13. Harris (84%) and Henton (75%) weren't too bad themselves, though; so if the Friars are going to be a poor FT shooting team, it'll be because of Dunn, Carson (67%), and the incoming freshmen.
I couldn't agree more about Harris. It appears as though he decides to shoot it well before receiving the ball -- head down, dribble into 3 players, whatever it takes. After turning the ball over in the first half, he followed up with an awful 3-point shot attempt -- but luckily for the Friars, it went in.
Albany isn't a good team right now. If they were even average, we'd be talking about a loss tonight.
The talent's there, but the chemistry isn't. Here's hoping it develops quickly.

If there is such a thing as a link to Sonar's post-game remarks I would strongly suggest listening to him.
He was astute and I was edified.

Solid comments with not much to add - we have issues and need answers.
Agree this is a developing team - call them 'young' or 'inexperienced' or whatever but they will need to find themselves quickly with so many games on the horizon, and the obvious scoring need is glaring.
With Henton/Harris as our obvious go-to's and sure we should get much from them but will also be vulnerable to being shut down quickly.
No coach here - just a fan but Dunn has to find his game - not sure with Cartwight in there he will...
Monday's game should be a walk over - right? - well, who knows.
Think Thursday's Navy game will be a wake up as they will certainly bring energy, discipline and a cohesive intact team that will score consistently...

3. Bentil is going to be a real player. He's got a nice hook shot. Knocked one down from 6-8 ft. in the 2nd half right in front of me.

He played well for a frosh, but lets get real. He needs time. Do you remember what Gomes did his first game as a frosh? Against a real school? He went to town.

If you could magically substitute Cotton for Cartwright, the whole game (and this thread) takes on a different tone.
As stated, like Clearasil, he covered a ton of warts. Everyone, including Dunn, looks and plays a lot better.
Also, Cotton effectively shot almost all the end game free throws...at 100%- lifting the teams overall average.
Physically and emotionally, Cotton took all the pressure off everyone else....that's some big shoes to fill!
Cartwright will likely be okay...he a freshman and his defensive needs to improve a whole lot.
Dunn maybe fine too...but it was tough watching him last night.....he has no confidence in his shot...none...Better teams will play him to drive and he wasn't finishing at the rim against Albany...yikes!
Hassett is very bullish on Lindsay. He feels with time he will be both the offensive and defensive presence that was lacking last night.
Scary schedule coming right up! One week from now, the natives will either be happy or restless.

As well as his 2nd and 3rd....................
