fsu/bc/mass/nd/uri....what's the realistic expectation? 3-2?......BE probably needs us to go 4-1....

I would think 4-1 is not too much too ask or is unreasonable.

Include Miami and I would sign up for the 4-2. Only one true road game being BC, which should be a "W" and 5-1 is what we really need. Split ND and FSU and take the rest.

Man its a tough schedule. Not a lot of margin for error really. I have a hard time seeing us lose more than 3 OOC games and entering the BE in what I'd consider 'good' shape. Which means of those games mentioned plus Kentucky, even if we lose 3 there, we need to hold court in every other game without a hiccup.

Well yes - but strength of schedule is critical to be that bubble team that gets in vs. those with a Mr. Softee OOC. It all goes hand and hand with building a program that competes nationally.
I believe Cooley when he says openly that he wants to win the National Championship.
To do so he must attract the recruits needed to do just that so expect this scheduling Juggernaut to get even tighter and he continues with his quixotic quest.

You can either continue to spin your wheels trying to prove supremacy against middling opponents, or schedule the toughest teams possible OOC and get better. That means bringing in top talent, and not fearing those teams/games...Make it routine really. Cooley is going the latter route. It might hurt initially but in the long run will pay off. The hardest challenge I believe is getting quality opponents outside of New England to agree to travel to the Dunk. I will say the partnership with the Big 10 is HUGE, well done to Val and the Big East execs on that one.

VERY well said dmac80...as cooley said on the radio show about getting those heavy hitters to the Dunk, we're doing well upgrading the schedule including getting the heavy hitters on neutral sites and tourneys, but we're not there yet in terms of getting them to The Dunk. we took a big step last year and we need to build on that accomplishment. Then he ticked off the pre-season tourneys we will be in over the next 5 years. Most observers that I have heard think we have two easy games in ooc...Binghamton and Navy
Not bad for a guy with 3 seasons under his belt ...and stop and think...what a mess the poor bast%$@#%&*% inherited
He and his staff are making good money and we fans are reasonably happy.

Oh I believe he believes that one, but seriously wtm, you don't really believe it's doable, do you?

Sorry Dmac...I don't see it as overly tough....I think it has the potential to be a good schedule....you are correct about the margin for error....I think us being on the outside of the ncaas without the bet last year tells us that...and that was with the BE having a very good conf rpi....you could argue that those six are more important than our conf schedule...especially the 4 against the acc....

Say what you want about 'lil ricky and there sure is a lot BUT this was his mantra and it has been missing from our program for far too long. It was his greatest asset - a vision - that carried those kids in 1986 - do you remember Billy the Robot and eventually the entire team?
Every interview, every question was answered by that repetitive mantra, "Our goal is to win the National Championship". Well maybe Billy the Kid didn't quite make it but man what a ride through life he has had, eh?
Now we have another visionary in Ed Cooley who has the chops to say this openly from day 1.
And yes I certainly do believe it is doable, I also believe he will deliver on his promise.
As the late great petro always told me..."It's 5 kids and a basketball"

I guess we are down to Binghamton as our one cupcake. network.yardbarker.com/college_basketball/article_external/young_michigan_state_team_to_face_experienced_navy_squad/17690126?mb_edition=3902&linksrc=mb_favorites_headYoung Michigan State team to face experienced Navy squad November 12, 2014 by Ryan Squanda The new look No. 18 Michigan State basketball team will get its season underway Friday night when they hit the road to take on the Navy Midshipmen. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET and will be televised on CBS Sports Network. There’s no doubt the Spartans should be heavily favored in this one. However, if there’s one thing the Midshipmen have more of than the Spartans, it’s experience. Led by a trio of upperclassmen who averaged over 11 points a game last season – guards Tilman Dunbar and Brandon Venturini and forward Worth Smith – the Midshipmen also return five starters from the 2013-14 season. “I think it’s a good test,” Michigan State head basketball coach Tom Izzo said at a press conference on Tuesday. “I think (Navy) will be a very disciplined, organized team that runs their stuff really well. That will be important that we can defend that.” As for Michigan State, Izzo has stressed leadership of his team all preseason long – for good reason too. As opposed to last year’s veteran squad, this year’s team returns just six scholarship players. Freshmen and transfers have filled the void of the several departed Spartans, but according to many surrounding the MSU basketball program, the Spartans still have a ways to go. “I think it’s building,” senior point guard Travis Trice said of the leadership and overall chemistry of the team. “Today (in practice), we made some mental mistakes on defense just with our team being young so we’re just trying to clean that up.” Freshmen like Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn are set to play in their first regular season action for the Spartans. (Photo by Matthew Mitchell/MSU Athletic Communications) One of the younger guys who has taken a big part in the maturation process of this young Michigan State team is freshman point guard Lourawls Nairn. Nairn, who averaged 1 point and 4.5 assists in the two exhibition games, says at times in the past couple of months, guys like Travis Trice and Denzel Valentine have taken him aside to explain things he had trouble grasping at first. Heading into his first regular season game of his college career, Nairn realizes the importance of these meetings. “(Navy) knows how to play together because they’ve been together so long,” Nairn said. “But us, I think (MSU’s) older guys have done such a good job with helping us new guys learn the plays faster and knowing where to be on the court at all times.” And with a very experienced Navy team on slate for Friday, veteran leaders of the MSU basketball program recognize that although the Naval Academy went just 9-21 a year ago, the Midshipmen could still prove a very tough test. “They’re a really experienced team and they’re tough guys. They’re in the Navy,” junior guard Denzel Valentine said. “It’s going to be a tough job on the road playing against them on their home court. We’re just going to have to show the young guys what to do and lead by example … We’ve got to keep it consistent and keep showing these guys every game and every practice.” Trice also shares in these beliefs. “We can’t (overlook anyone), especially with our team this year,” Trice said. “Last year, we might have had the luxury of maybe overlooking games. But with the team we have this year, we can’t do that. And that’s something we’ve been stressing from day one … Honestly, I don’t know (who we’re playing) second. We’re trying to take in one game at a time.”

Last year every team we thought would have a good year crapped all over themselves and hurt P.C.'s RPI.
This year might prove to be just the opposite.
