So, who didn't he get along with, Coaches? Players? I thought Cooley thrives on the family mentality?

Those were my thoughts as well. Cooley preaches a family environment yet this guy goes to Colorado and starts talking about a family environment and chemistry like PC doesn't emphasize that. It's a slap in the face in some ways.

Perhaps it's the hour but, in reading the article, the I interpreted the "family" and "vibe" comments as references to what he witnessed on his visit to Boulder - and subsequently why he chose the Buffs...
Unless of course, "the up and coming nature of the program" is reason for one to leave PC...
("... He cited team chemistry as a big factor in his decision, as well as the up-and-coming nature of the program.
When I first came to visit I felt, like, the family vibe,” says Fortune. “All around, everyone got along, a good team, and a family vibe. It (the decision) was difficult at first but after coming out and meeting the coaches and the players it got kinda easy after that.”)

My gut reaction: It still doesn't get to some underlying truth. And I didn't like the writing; it's written by a student.

After re-reading it again it appears that he was talking about Colorado but didn't he have all of those things at PC before he left? Family atmosphere, chemistry with teammates, up and coming program... etc. I guess there is more to it than we know.

I do believe that PC offered him each of those attributes, and agree that there was "something else" that prompted his decision to move on.
My sense is we'll never find out the facts...
Was he (or someone close to him) thin skinned in response to the retrospective comments related to where he fell out in the early season depth chart, and in an act of retribution, left following some of his best performances, in order to set the record straight on the impact that he had, and somehow feel more appreciated by PC?
Was he concerned that minus Cotton's scoring ability, limitations in his game might get exposed? Some players perform better when they are drawing less attention - which often times, leads to having more space and the time to get their shots off.

Why rehash this again. Josh helped us win last year. He left. I thank him and wish him well.

"Family" aside, it's not hard to figure out. He didn't like being 2nd fiddle to Bryce (Cooley's featured player). He wasn't going to do that again --if he even had a starting job-- for another PG.
By the way I never bought into the "closer to home" thing. Some writer imagined it and that makes it true.

Agree.
Not a mistake if he didn't like it here - maybe in basketball terms but maybe not in life. Think johnny gets this right - he helped us so we say thanks and then he voted with his feet so there you go.
Do you think the Buffs will teach him how to pass on an in-bounds play?
Just kidding, NOT.

Cooley raved about Josh Fortune at the start of last season and claimed he was going to be a big contributor. He loved his physical growth over that summer into the fall of 2013.
Very early on it was evident Bryce Cotton had to go off in order for the team to win any game. And even then Cooley knew he needed Fortune, Harris, or Henton (or Batts) to also have a big game. Cooley had to do whatever he could to keep Bryce on the court, allow Bryce the freedom to make things happen, etc.
Fortune came on late, and was thrilled to win and be on the team. Winning solves everything. I think Fortune had something building over all the talk from last season through the spring recruiting period where the talk went from Austin to Lyle to Graham to Cartwright to transfers guards to Thaarpe.
Fortune wanted to have a handle on the ball and be more of a 1. Seeing all of these guys coming through and Cooley spending so much time trying to find Cotton's replacement probably made Josh feel overlooked, under-appreciated - which does happen in a family at times - and he was able to speak with his parents, get a chance to have them around and make a decision that was best for him.
I will never fault a player for leaving if they truly feel there is something better out there for them. I cannot fault any player under these conditions where they are held to any sort of commitment when a coach could leave tomorrow. Does that mean this was a smart decision? I won't be able to tell you for a couple years. Jakarr Sampson left St Johns and was a 2nd Round pick...Ledo...same story but at least he has NBA-level talent. These are tough life decisions. I wish Josh all the best. Good kid who worked hard, dealt with a lot and played well when it mattered.
