Waiting on Bentil
While Rhody is pleased with some news from the NCAA, Providence is still waiting on word regarding the eligibility of freshman forward Ben Bentil. He is still navigating through the NCAA’s Clearinghouse. Bentil is a native of Ghana who attended St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Del. from 2011-14. Bentil is qualified academically but the NCAA takes a close look at the backgrounds of foreign players. PC’s other foreign import, 7-1 center Paschal Chukwu, was recently cleared and coach Ed Cooley says he’s hopeful Bentil is as well.
“Ben is doing great with us,” Cooley said. “We’re getting all of his paper work from the schools he’s been at and having the NCAA take a look at it. Once they do that I think he’ll be fine. We had to secure some information from Ghana, which is not easy.”
Cooley said that his late-August import, German guard Tyree Chambers, is adding some maturity to a team that features seven new players. Chambers is 20 years old and has played at the club level in Europe.
“He’s still learning but he gives us an older presence and should be able to settle our younger guys down. He played at a good club level in Germany,” he said.
Lay of the land
PC had two of its three verbally committed 2015 recruits on campus over the weekend as Indiana shooter Ryan Fazekas and Baltimore guard Drew Edwards were in town. Florida forward Alex Owens visited in August and is also set to sign a letter-of-intent in November.
Justin Robinson, a point guard from Virginia, was also on campus. Robinson is PC’s top priority to add to the 2015 class. He’s also visited Virginia Tech and Maryland and may also see Creighton and UNLV before picking a school.
