can positions 3-10 on the roster overcome the loss of our top 2 from last year is the obvious question. we shouldn't have to play 2 on 5 anymore. Can 7 player replace 2 players? I would hope so and believe they will replace them. I see nothing but upgrades made. Let’s put it this way, we have more options to fill any voids than we did last year.

So what's this look like when we play our best lineup: JAR Cardet Bensley Hopkins Essandoko That sound right? I do not think Bryce will be ready at the start of the season. I see JAR moving to the 4 and Pierre joining the guards. PIZZA, SODA, GRINDERS!!! Lot of experienced talent and love the potential of the young bigs. Joseph could be really good assuming he buys in. Challenge for the staff will be getting them all to gel- could take some time.

Thank you. Deeper team BUT in college hoops you get defined by your best three players, especially in the tournament. I had us at .500 in the BE and an NIT team last year so I nailed it ( ) but with Hopkins our top-3 might have seen us in the the 2nd round of the tournament, maybe even the S16. How Info runs it down here we'll be far deeper and more competitive. Ceiling just might not be as high.

I think with BHop's injury (in addition to the injury to Fernandez) and the makeup of the roster, last year's team ran a slower offense than the staff envisions for next season. Just a guess here, but I think Kim English took notice of UConn's two-headed monster at the 5 and their team's depth that resulted in the ability to run and wear down opponents.

PIZZA,SODA,GRINDERS!!! Comparing this past year to next year: 1- should definitely be improved from what I think was our weakest position last year with an experienced lefty in Joseph plus an older Pierre. 2- Carter is surely a huge loss but offensively we should cover it with Cardet, Fernandez, Pierre, Floyd and Abdur-Rahim. Very hard to replicate Carter's impact on D except by committee. 3- way more quality depth with all the above minus Pierre and add Barron, Hopkins and maybe Mela if he surprises. 4- should be much improved here as we played without a true 4 last year (Ticket's effort greatly appreciated) assuming a healthy Hopkins plus Abdur-Rahim, maybe some Oswin and/or Christ 5- much like at point hopefully we can cover for the big void left by Josh by a committee of the 3 bigs. Have high hopes for Christ on the offensive end in Kim's system and assuming Oswin is here he has the potential to be impactful at least defensively right away. Liked the comparison of Oswin to Samson Johnson. We shall see. Looks to me like we should be clearly better at point, wing and power forward. How well we are able to replace the production and presence of Carter and Oduro will determine how far we go. I like our chances to dance and win a game or two.

While I largely agree with your point about a team's 3 best players, I like to conceptualize it like this: 1) You need at least 2 MONEY players, i.e. high-caliber players who can make a play/basket when needed in those crucial moments when games are won/lost. A team built to be "greater than the sum of their parts" likely has a lower ceiling. Too much has to go right on any given day. 2) However, depth matters. In fact, during my prime fandom years, I've witnessed many Friar teams succumb to a lack of it. Take just last year, for instance. If you were trying to "fix" a game in favor of PC's opponent, your best bet was to blow two quick whistles on Oduro. He'd then sit for most of the 1st 1/2, as the Friars would need everything shy of a miracle to keep their heads above water. He'd then, in some cases, pick up a quick 3rd within the first handful of minutes of the 2nd half. In "must-have" games on the road or in the tournament, being too dependent on just one player (and balanced officiating) becomes akin to the story of Achilles. Seemingly having 0 catastrophic fall-off at any position in foul trouble (or just not "having it") is a big deal. 3) In college basketball, stars emerge "out of nowhere," perhaps, more than in any other sport. We knew Devin Carter was good. But this good? Not me. We need a couple of players to make the Bryce Cotton leap next season. The contenders? There's plenty. Pierre, Cardet, Hopkins, Jamir ... and heck, maybe even Floyd. You just never know ... which is what makes following hoops so much fun! I would have laughed if someone told me Barron would be starting games during the last off-season ... Perhaps it's my optimistic nature, but I think Kim English is going to help get a handful of these guys to pop.

Excellent analysis sir. however, as a complete guess, I'm looking for one of Barron, Fernandez, Mela or Essandoko to make the major-league leap next season. (I hope we are both right!)

Excellent analysis sir. however, as a complete guess, I'm looking for one of Barron, Fernandez, Mela or Essandoko to make the major-league leap next season. (I hope we are both right!) I think a reasonable argument could be made for any of those guys, which speaks to the roster Kim has built. If you're trying to increase the probability of having a handful of players take the leap, the more cards the better ... plus, competition is the pressure that makes diamonds. I'm really, really excited for next season.
